Old coins, both communist and from the times of the Second Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, are of great interest to collectors. At auctions, they reach high prices, collectors do not hesitate to pay tens of thousands of zlotys for the purchase of “treasures” in demand on the numismatic market.
On Monday, March 27, two online auctions ended, which recorded record prices for old coins. In the first of them, which we wrote about on the pages of Wprost.pl, a five-zloty coin from 1958, popularly known as the “fisherman”, was sold. At the second auction, the subject of the auction was a five-zloty coin from the time of the Second Polish Republic.
Two auctions attracted the attention of collectors
These two auctions electrified antique coin collectors for many days. They also caught the attention of internet users on social media. According to experts, these were rare and sought-after coins in excellent condition. “Perfectly preserved relief details and double-sided mint mirror, beautiful patina” - this is how the five-zloty coin with the “banner” of 1930 was described. This is a commemorative coin minted for the 100th anniversary of the start of the November Uprising.
In a similar tone, experts also spoke of a five-zloty coin with a “fisherman”. The coin, despite being 65 years old, looked like it had just come out of the mint. “The most beautiful copy we have ever had for sale. Gorgeous mint mirror on the reverse and beautiful glitter on the obverse.” - said the numismatic bureau of Krzysztof Jezhikowski.
Large sums for coins of several decades ago
Dozens of enthusiasts make subsequent bets, each time increasing the bet amount by PLN 100. A five zloty coin depicting a fisherman was sold for 8,099 zlotys. The great interest and high price of the coin is due to the fact that it was minted in two versions, differing in the number “8”.
- Most of the coins had a narrow figure eight. In this case, it is wide, shaped like a snowman. There are few such coins, preserved in good condition, in circulation. Hence the great interest in the auction one of the experts said.
Collectors pay a fortune for old coins. Tens of thousands of zlotys is the norm
Previous auctions of five zloty coins with the “fisherman” also reached large amounts. The collector paid the most in February 2020. The coin sought on the market was then sold for 6.7 thousand. zloty. In turn, one of the collectors paid 33.1 thousand zlotys for a “sign” coin of 5 zlotys with a deep stamp. zloty.
Silver, rare five zloty coins are one of the many auction hits. Each time, the sale of coins is of great interest to numismatic lovers. At the end of last year, the Rzeszow Auction House sold such a coin for PLN 48,000. zloty.
Despite such a high price, this is not the most expensive and not the rarest coin from the time of the Second Commonwealth. For a five zloty coin of 1932 with the image of a winged Nike on the reverse, you have to pay at auctions from a few tens to more than a hundred thousand zlotys. According to experts, there are few such coins in Poland, which is why every time they are put up for auction, they reach such large amounts.
