Bathing in the city fountain is very dangerous for health, unfortunately, many people often forget about it. However, the consequences of this moment of coolness can be very serious, especially for children.
Bathing in fountains, especially for children, is a common sight in Polish cities. High temperatures make everyone want to cool down a little, but this shape is one of the worst possible options. The Main Sanitary Inspection reminds how dangerous this can be.
Swimming in fountains is dangerous to health
Fountains are a decorative element of architecture, but by no means should not act as “pools”. The water in them can be harmful to our health. The GIS recently posted an official warning on its Facebook profile that the water in the fountains is not suitable for drinking or bathing. It should be remembered that it flows in a closed circuit, which means it is not tested. Despite the chlorination of water, many bacteria and fungi can be found in it. This, in turn, can negatively affect our health and cause various types of diseases.
Why is swimming in a fountain dangerous?
Epidemiologists warn that fountains can contain dozens of different microorganisms, including staphylococcal bacteria, salmonella, legionella bacilli, fecal bacteria, such as E. coli, enterococci. According to the Main Sanitary Inspection, water from the fountain can cause:
-
respiratory disease,
-
conjunctivitis,
-
streptococcal infection (threatened by pharyngitis, pneumonia and even meningitis),
-
staphylococcal infection (threatened by inflammation of the bronchi, lungs, trachea, tonsils),
-
allergic reactions on the skin in the form of a rash,
-
urinary tract and bladder infections
-
foot fungus and other skin diseases.
In addition, bathing in fountains can also lead to injury. The splash guards and sides of the fountain are slippery and running on them may result in a fall, head injury or injury.
However, if after the situation when you entered the fountain, you notice alarming symptoms, you should consult a doctor and be sure to inform him that such bathing has taken place. The specialist will then refer you to appropriate tests to check for certain bacteria. Such fountain baths can be especially dangerous for young children. This is because their immune systems are not yet fully developed and may not be able to fight off every serious infection.
Why is the water in the fountains not suitable for swimming?
Many people are probably wondering why the water in the fountains can be so dangerous to our health? This is due to several factors. First of all, for example, animals can swim in it - mainly birds and dogs. In addition to impurities, their feces often remain in the water. In addition, people still go to the fountains very often - while these are large groups with different levels of personal hygiene. Moreover, it is here that the homeless sometimes satisfy their physiological needs. Another factor that increases the risk of various bacteria in the water is high ambient temperatures. Different types of urban pollution should also be taken into account.
When looking for coolness in the city, you should choose, for example, water curtains, as well as safe places and places for swimming, such as pools, where the water is regularly checked. It should also be remembered that violation of the ban on swimming in the fountain is punishable by a fine.
