“We use equipment made 60 years ago”: how anti-aircraft gunners of the Armed Forces of Ukraine shoot down enemy drones in Donbas

Must read

The Russian army is experiencing problems with the amount of ammunition and drones. But despite this, its UAVs pose a serious threat to Ukrainian technology. In addition, in March 2023, it became known about the production of a new UAV “Privet”, which is already in service with the Russian troops fighting in Ukraine.

In the new plot of the “Ukrainian Witness” project, anti-aircraft gunners of the Armed Forces of Ukraine with the call signs “Demon”, “Smile” and “Foma”. Their unit is fighting in the Donetsk region, the task of the unit is to cover the artillery mounts and the people who work with them, to protect other weapons and equipment.

The guys shoot down air targets of the Russian army with the ZU-23-2 installation. The anti-aircraft gun is old, it was still in service with the Soviet army. And the technique used by the heroes of the video was made between 1961-1971. But, according to the anti-aircraft gunners themselves, it performs its functions well even today.

Our anti-aircraft gunners hit enemy targets fast enough not to get into return fire: the crew leaves the position immediately after working out. “The guys saw in the picture that an enemy drone is flying in our area, or they heard how it works, says Demon. - They left and worked on it. Hit him or not, you can see immediately“. After that, the guys hide in a shelter.

There was a day we hit three targets, - recalls “Demon”. - The first was a Russian-made Orlan-10 drone, accompanied by two Lancets. And if the first one has outdated optics and works loudly enough, so it is not difficult to notice it, then the second one is quite dangerous for Ukrainian equipment“.

Lancet” works against armored vehicles, its targets are tanks and artillery, Thomas explained. - In comparison, Shaheed can work on any target.“.

On that day, our guys shot down both Lancets: the first exploded in the air, the second crashed on the ground after it was hit. The Orlan was flying too high to reach it with anti-aircraft guns, so the drone was already shot down by the Strela-10 anti-aircraft missile system.

There is also such a Zala drone- said “Smile”. - And he’s scarier than Orlan. This is a reconnaissance vehicle that is difficult to see in bad weather, as it merges with the clouds.”

In addition to the three aforementioned UAVs, Russia also has a UAV of the “Privet” series in service. It is supplied by volunteer units and private military companies. This is an attack drone that flies very low - 20-30 meters above the ground. “While you are looking for him in the sky, he works almost at ground level, - explains “Smile” the specifics of the work of this UAV. - Our targets, which were scouted by these drones, are most often covered by Russians with Hurricanes and 152 calibers..

According to Demon, Russian air reconnaissance officers are learning and changing tactics. “When we arrived here, in the Donbass, our and other units could shoot down 3-4 drones in a week. The enemy took into account their mistakes: now the reconnaissance drone flies higher, and the strike UAVs, that is, the Lancets, occupy a low altitude, where it is difficult to see them. In addition, the intervals between shelling have now increased significantly. No adversary can have an infinite amount of ammunition, drones and military weapons, and everyone understands this very well.“.

Earlier, FACTS published an interview with Maxim Muzyka: “In the war of drones, we have every chance to lose to Russia.”
