Nick Fury (English)Samuel L. Jackson) is back in action for the first time in a long time for the upcoming DISney+ series. Secret invasion. During Disney D23 last Saturday, a new full-length trailer for the series was released. As one of the few synopses released to the public, it provides insight into fan favorites such as Emilia Clarke in action for the first time since it was first announced.
Secret Invasion is a huge storyline in comics that could be the same for the MCU. Judging by the trailer, it is. Fury hasn’t been in the world for many years, so the question is what has he been up to since we last saw him in Spider-Man: Far From Home? Kevin Feige also announced at D23 that this series will be directly linked to Armored Wars, which is currently scheduled to shoot next year. This is also very clear from a certain cameo in the trailer. With all the political intrigue in this trailer, it definitely looks like this series will raise the stakes higher than ever.
The trailer opens with Fury supposedly landing on Earth for the first time in a very long time, which is confirmed immediately afterward when Maria Hill’s voice-over (Cobie Smulders) starts. She tells Fury that she went to him for help, but he didn’t return any of her calls. His actions showed that he was avoiding Earth at all costs. Fury explains that he is finally back, but only because it’s an emergency.
It then quickly cuts to Fury sitting with none other than James Rhodes aka War Machine (Don Cheadle), the aforementioned cameo. Fury warns him that he needs to check his security team because no one can be trusted. In the comics, a group of Skrulls managed to infiltrate the Avengers, putting them at a disadvantage. One quick shot shows Olivia ColmanX character and another guy in some room with people lying in some kind of capsules. Are these the people that the Skrulls pretend to be, or vice versa? The trailer also shows a peek at the return of Everett Ross (Martin Freeman) for the first time since Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
As many fans already know, Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) returns after his brief cameo in Spider-Man: Far From Home where he posed as Nick Fury. It looks like both of them are still working very closely together and will take on this mission. Talos warns Fury that they need to be very careful from now on, so it can be assumed that things aren’t going well for the heroes. It cuts into an action scene where Talos attacks a guy at one table, after which everyone around him instantly turns into the exact same guy, meaning he’s surrounded by the enemy and has no idea. Then all the carnage that the villains are causing is displayed, and then there is a voice-over from newcomer Olivia Colman. character. Seemingly Fury’s enemy, she taunts him by saying that he is not well equipped for the upcoming battle.
In the next few scenes, the unnamed rookie character Emilia Clarke warns Fury that everything is corrupt and no one can be trusted. Fans were very excited when Marvel first announced the casting of Emilia Clarke and rumors swirled around the internet. Based on these shots, it definitely looks like she’s going to play a pretty significant role in the series.
What is clear is that no one knows who they can trust at the moment, which is definitely underlined by the scene where Nick Fury’s voice says “This is my war to fight alone” which shows a quick glimpse of Fury alone. The rest of the trailer is filled with explosions, chases, fights and other explosions. One of the quick shots during this sequence shows the helicopter firing a missile at the SUV that appears to be transporting the politician due to the escort shown around them. The question is, who is in this helicopter, and is it Fury or one of the Skrulls in disguise? There’s also a quick shot of a screaming Skrull, which could indicate it could be one of the bad ones. Also, he’s a little different from the Skrulls we’ve seen before.
The last shot of Nick Fury at the end of the trailer is so simple, but it raises a lot of questions. It shows an image similar to the opening shot of the spaceship doors opening, but now Nick Fury looks the same as he did in Phase 1 and Phase 2. We followed the impostor in this trailer, and the real Fury doesn’t show up? although somewhere halfway? You can’t even trust what you see on the screen at this moment, because, in fact, everything is under suspicion!
There is no exact release date yet, but we know for sure that it will be released sometime in the spring of 2023. This series will become one of the most important in the entire franchise since Vandavision or Loki. It will also be directly related to Armored Wars. There’s so much political intrigue, as well as a ton of suspense and a major mystery that the MCU has been working on for a while now. Fury can’t trust anyone, and as someone who has always been paranoid, how will that affect Fury as a character? It also seems like it will have some huge implications for this Secret Invasion during phase 5 and beyond.
How this will affect the MCU remains to be seen, but our heroes definitely have work to do.
