After the birth of a child, the father has the right to three types of leave – parental leave, parental leave and parental leave. The first depends on maternity leave, while the other two are independent of each other and of the leave taken by the mother. This free form can be used by self-employed individuals.

– Parental leave is 14 days. They can be used during the first 24 months of a child’s life, and leave must be applied for 7 days before the scheduled start of the leave, explains Joanna Grochala, accountant at inFakt.

During parental leave, you do not need to suspend your business, but you must pay the ZUS health care premium. However, an entrepreneurial father who goes on maternity leave is not required to pay social contributions. The inFakt expert’s calculations show that if a father pays Small ZUS, he will save about PLN 421 over a period of 14 days of parental leave. If he pays according to the Big ZUS rules, PLN 1,675 will remain in his wallet. These amounts include savings on contributions and benefit payments from ZUS.

Dad’s paternity leave

In addition to the two weeks’ leave, fathers are also entitled to 9 weeks’ parental leave, which can be used until the end of the calendar year in which the child turns 6. A parent can apply for parental leave once or divide it into up to 5 parts.

– However, it should be remembered that if a parent does not use parental leave before the child reaches the age of 6, the amount of this leave is lost. An application for parental leave must be submitted to the employer 21 days before the start of the leave or part of it, i.e.translators Joanna Grochala.

During parental leave, you can save around PLN 1328 on Small ZUS and around PLN 5278 on Large ZUS respectively for a total period of 9 weeks. As with parental leave, these amounts consist of savings in contributions and the payment of ZUS benefits.

The child’s father can also take full maternity leave (then called parental leave), which is usually used by the child’s mother.

What to do to get benefits?

If a self-employed father wants to receive paternity or child care benefits, he must pay sickness contributions 90 days before the scheduled vacation. In addition, you must not be in arrears on your ZUS payments to receive benefits.

- When applying for a vacation, do not forget to attach the relevant documents to it. For both parental leave and parental leave, an application and an abbreviated copy of the child’s birth certificate and a completed ZUS Z-3b form must be submitted –notes the expert inFakt.
