The Ioniq 5 N, the first electric vehicle in Hyundai’s N sports division, represents a new segment of driver-focused electric sports cars. It represents the first step in the N electrification strategy, with other electric N models to follow in the future.
The world premiere of the Hyundai Motor Company’s Ioniq 5 N, the first all-electric sports N model, took place at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in West Sussex, England.
The N brand returned to the WRC in 2014, and subsequent success in the World Championship has given Hyundai winning DNA that is reflected in N sports models. This momentum continues with electrification as the E-GMP-based Ioniq 5 provides the foundation for the first sports electric vehicle. P
The Ioniq 5 N combines the standard model’s Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) with motorsport-derived N technologies and leverages N’s expertise in electrified “labs on wheels” (such as the RM20e, RN22e and N Vision 74) for maximum performance. and make sure it aligns with the three pillars of the N: Corner Swindler, Race Track Opportunity, and Everyday Sports Car.
Dual motor all wheel drive
The Ioniq 5 N’s Corner Rascal capability is achieved by reinforcing the body structure with 42 additional weld points and 2.1 meters of additional glue lines. The engine and battery mounts have been strengthened, and the front and rear subframes have been redesigned to increase lateral rigidity. WRC-style integrated drive axles are used at both the front and rear and are further reinforced to handle increased electric motor torque while reducing unsprung weight through the use of forged 21-inch alloy wheels.
To improve steering response and feedback, the Ioniqa 5N’s steering column has been reinforced for increased rigidity. In addition, the car is equipped with a specially tuned N-shaped steering with a higher gear ratio and better feedback. These improvements result in a more direct and communicative handling that inspires more confidence in drivers.
The N Pedal was designed as a solution to accommodate the natural weight and size of electric vehicles while aiming for the handling characteristics of Hyundai’s famous i20 N WRC rally success. This intelligent software feature implemented in the Ioniqu 5N is designed to provide instant turn-on and increased throttle sensitivity. Based on similar technology to the i-Pedal regenerative braking system, the N Pedal prioritizes fast cornering over energy efficiency. Through the use of braking force, aggressive weight transfer is created, resulting in sharper corner entry.
N Drift Optimizer helps maintain yaw angle by balancing multiple vehicle controls in real time. The built-in Torque Kick Drift feature allows the driver to simulate the clutch operation of a rear-wheel drive internal combustion engine vehicle in driving scenarios that require immediate drift initiation.
Torque Distribution N provides a fully adjustable torque distribution between the front and rear wheels, which can be adjusted in 11 levels. E-LSD (Electronic Limited Slip Differential) on the rear axle optimizes cornering behavior and provides control. Additional sensors in the wheels and greater damping capacity, together with larger shock absorbers, expand the range of electronically controlled suspension adjustment.
Advanced Electric Drive System
Several technical improvements have been implemented in this powerful electric vehicle. Its electric motors accelerate to 21,000 rpm, developing 478 kW/650 hp. in N Green Boost mode. This is made possible by a two-stage, energy-efficient inverter that delivers more power output from a new 84kWh battery.
Several unique features will help you achieve the best results on the track. N Grin Boost improves acceleration with 10 seconds of power gain, while N Launch Control provides three different levels of grip for the fastest launch, allowing drivers to launch like a professional racing car. Track SOC (Status of Charge Tracking Mode) automatically calculates power consumption per lap.
The Ioniq 5 N sets a new standard for thermal management in the harsh conditions of the race track. Compared to its competitors, the Ioniq 5N boasts greater resistance to heat-induced power reduction, i.e. loss of maximum power due to overheating.
Improved battery temperature management system.
Before driving, the driver can use the N battery preconditioning function to optimize the battery cell temperature to the most favorable one, choosing between Drag mode for short bursts of full power or Track mode which keeps the battery cool. as many circles as possible.
The N Race feature further optimizes the EV’s endurance on the track by giving drivers more direct control over the vehicle’s energy consumption. N Race uses an approach borrowed from motorsports to maximize resources to achieve the highest possible time. While this type of setting change usually requires a team of mechanics and equipment, the Ioniq 5 N offers it in just a few clicks.
In N Race, racers have a strategic choice: choose Endurance or Sprint mode. “Endurance” increases the range on the race track. This is achieved by limiting peak power, resulting in a slower temperature rise. In contrast, Sprint prioritizes power. This will help drivers carefully manage their energy strategy to meet their driving efficiency goals.
The Ioniq 5 N is equipped with N brakes, Hyundai’s most powerful braking system. It has 400mm front discs with four-piston calipers and 360mm rear discs. These brakes are made from new lightweight materials and have optimized airflow for improved cooling efficiency. In addition, the regenerative (regenerative) braking system, commonly used to improve performance, has been rethought in the IONIQ 5 N to improve braking performance. It serves as the primary source of stopping power, with mechanical brakes complementing the extra stopping power when needed for enhanced trail durability.
Everyday sportsman
As an everyday sports car, the Ioniq 5N delivers breathtaking shifting and an immersive driving experience with N e-shift and N Active Sound+. N e-shift delivers a sense of control over power delivery and shifting feel, while N Active Sound+ delivers not only the futuristic sound of an electric vehicle, but engine and exhaust sounds similar to those of combustion-engine vehicles for a more engaging driving experience. Together they add to the enjoyment of driving by imitating the jerk and sound of a combustion engine car.
The Ioniq 5 N is also equipped with N Road Sense, which automatically recommends the activation of N mode when it detects double turn road signs, allowing drivers to make the most of every second of driving.
Model N differs from the standard Ioniq 5 in a change in proportions. Overall, it’s 20mm lower, 50mm wider to accommodate wider tires, and 80mm longer thanks to a more prominent cone.
At the front there is a hood with an N logo and a bumper with an air curtain and air flaps for extra cooling. The spoiler runs down the bottom of the bumper to highlight the car’s silhouette and hint at its performance. The exclusive EV color “N” “Luminous Orange” at the bottom of the black front bumper trim continues along the side sills.
There are also forged 21-inch alloy wheels with high grip Pirelli P-Zero 275/35R21 tires for better ride and handling as well as better grip on the track.
