Victoria Azarenka was Simon Jordan’s guest on the Up Front With Simon Jordan YouTube channel. The Belarusian spoke about the war in Ukraine, making interesting statements, including about the language difference between Russia and Ukraine, but also revealed her personal attitude to what is happening outside the eastern border of Poland. Her approach to Vladimir Putin’s war is clear.
Victoria Azarenka is undoubtedly one of the greatest legends in women’s tennis in Belarus. Her achievements are impressive - she has won singles twice at the Australian Open (2012, 2013) and once at the US Open (2007) and Roland Garros (2008). She has won 21 WTA Tour events, including 10 WTA Premier Mandatory titles. She also won the gold medal in mixed doubles at the 2012 London Olympics. Because of her background, her opinion on the war in Ukraine sounds very interesting.
Victoria Azarenka expressed her attitude to the war in Ukraine
The war in Ukraine continues to strongly influence what happens in the world of sports. This is clearly seen in tennis, where tennis players from Ukraine are hesitant to shake hands with players from Belarus and Russia. Victoria Azarenka experienced this first hand after the match with Elina Svitolina in the fourth round of Wimbledon. The Belarusian tennis star emphasizes that he is an ardent opponent of military operations in Ukraine. During a conversation on the Up Front With Simon Jordan YouTube channel, she reiterated this.
“The last 18 months have shaken the world. I was very worried about this, but, of course, not as much as the Ukrainian players, because bombs do not fly over my house. I am very sad and very sorry for all the innocent people who are suffering. Because of my father, I am part Ukrainian, I have many friends in Ukraine, family in Belarus and I know many people in Russia. As a child, I never felt much difference between the two countries. Everyone has their own language, but I did not feel any difference, even on a professional tour with Ukrainian or Russian tennis players. This war has divided countries so much, - said the titled tennis player.
“I don’t need to tell the world what I’ve done in the last 18 months”
Victoria Azarenka also stressed that even before the war, during various WTA Tour tournaments, she often came into contact with Russian and Ukrainian tennis players without feeling any language difference. What he really wants to achieve is to help people in difficult situations. She also expressed her opinion about the restrictions for Russians and Belarusians during Wimbledon.
“It is important for me to help people in difficult situations. I don’t need to tell the world what I’ve done in the last 18 months. I will not say that the ban on Russians and Belarusians last year at Wimbledon was a good decision. I’m not sure if anything has been achieved with this, perhaps others think otherwise. It would be much more useful to donate the prize money to humanitarian aid. It would show unity and that people want to help, the 34-year-old added.
