He won the NBA championship eleven times with the team from Boston, in 1957, 1959-1966, 1968-1969. He was declared MVP of the season five times. In 2009, the NBA Finals MVP Award was named after him.
Russell became the first black coach in league history.. After leaving the Celtics, he worked for the Seattle SuperSonics and Sacramento Kings, but was unsuccessful.
“Bill Russell, the greatest winner in American sports history, passed away peacefully today at the age of 88,” his Twitter profile reads.
Recently worked as a TV commentator. He left his wife and orphaned three children. “He was the greatest champion in all team sports. The countless accolades he has won throughout his career only hint at his impact throughout the league. Bill has become more than just an athlete,” said NBA Commissioner Adam Silver.
