Do you like dwelling on the past or thinking about the future? Give up this habit. Being “here and now” will bring you much more benefit. Check out what the concept of mindfulness is and what you can learn from it.
The concept of mindfulness, also called mindfulness training, refers in its assumptions to meditation techniques. The mentioned “exercises” consist in the conscious direction of attention to what is happening “here and now”. Concentration only on what we are experiencing at the moment. Not remembering, not returning to the past and not making plans for the future. Only the present matters and all the sensations that it brings, such as the smell of freshly cut grass, the taste of strawberries in dessert, or the creaking of the floor underfoot. We do not evaluate or classify anything. We simply follow the stimuli that grab our attention, even if at first they seem trivial and completely unimportant.
Why train mindfulness?
The concept of mindfulness was created in the 1970s. Interest in mindfulness training has grown over time. His popularity has not faded to this day. Here it is worth asking the question: why is this happening? Staying “here and now” allows you to free your mind from the fuss of thoughts. This is especially important in the modern world, where at every step we are bombarded with a lot of different information and stimuli that the brain is not able to process. As a result, the nervous system is overloaded. Mindfulness training allows you to counteract the phenomenon of hyperstimulation. Thanks to this, we can more easily calm down and find inner balance.
Mindfulness and psychophysical health of a person
It is also worth emphasizing that mindfulness training has a very specific and at the same time positive impact on the mental and physical condition of a person. What exactly is this impact? Research has shown that mindfulness can reduce the risk of mood disorders and relapses of depression. Depressive behavior is supported by dysfunctional ways of thinking and perceiving reality. They are also encouraged to constantly evaluate and criticize themselves. This, in turn, exacerbates withdrawal reactions. Mindfulness training combined with cognitive behavioral therapy allows you to change these negative beliefs and strengthen adaptive styles of emotion regulation and adequate ways of responding to difficult situations (active problem solving instead of avoidance strategies).
The concept of mindfulness also proves to be extremely helpful in mitigating the negative effects of stress. Mindfulness training suppresses cortisol secretion and strengthens the immune system. Therefore, it can play an important role not only in the prevention of mental disorders, but also somatic diseases. It should be noted that stress is considered one of the main risk factors for developing metabolic diseases (such as diabetes) or cancer.
