Running is a very dangerous activity. Check which injuries to pay special attention to

Must read

Running is one of the most popular types of physical activity. Considered relatively safe. This is true? Not necessary. An untrained runner can easily get injured. Find out which injuries are most common.

Physical activity, including running, has many benefits. Improves the overall performance of the body. It supports the maintenance of normal body weight. It promotes the release of endorphins, called happiness hormones. However, this form of movement is also associated with certain risks, especially when performed by a person without relevant experience. We are talking primarily about various types of damage within the musculoskeletal system.

What kind of injuries are runners prone to?

They are one of the most common “ailments” among runners. the so-called transfer nodes of the locomotive system, that is, skeletal and muscle dysfunctions (tendinopathy) caused by excessive tissue stress. They usually occur in the Achilles tendon or hamstring muscles. The main symptom of these problems is ankle pain that worsens during or immediately after exercise. It is also accompanied by other symptoms such as redness and swelling visible in the affected area. Limb mobility is limited. The treatment of overload syndromes is primarily to reduce inflammation. For this, various physiotherapeutic procedures are used (ultrasound, cryotherapy, etc.). There are other injuries that are common among runners. Worth mentioning:

  • iliotibial tract syndrome (ITBS) - the disease affects the structure that extends from the pelvis to the lower leg, which is responsible for stabilizing the knee joint. The disease is manifested by pain on the outside of the knee. Patients also complain of hip numbness, “crunching” in the knee, and difficulty walking. On physical examination, you may notice swelling visible below the knee joint. Treatment is mainly focused on relieving inflammation, relieving pain, and saving the limb.
  • Shin splints (or tibial overload syndrome) - it can be recognized primarily by pain in the lower leg. At first, the runner only feels this after a workout. Over time, the ailments become stronger and do not go away even after the cessation of activity. It can also radiate to other parts of the limb, making normal movement difficult. The treatment is to rest the leg. Sometimes it is necessary to give the patient non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
  • fatigue fractures - occur as a result of the accumulation or frequent recurrence of microtraumas caused by too intense running training. Their symptoms resemble those of other injuries described above. At first, there is a slight pain in the damaged area. Over time, its severity increases. Diseases become so painful that they often interfere not only with movement, but also with daily activities. The basis of the diagnostic process is the medical history. Your doctor will also order imaging tests, including x-rays and ultrasounds. The course of therapy depends on the causes that led to the fracture. Usually includes rest (cessation of training), use of orthopedic insoles, and rest of the limb.

Ankle sprains are also very common while running. Treatment of this type is based on the use of coolants and pharmacotherapy (administration of analgesics). It is also important to immobilize the joint and give up intense physical activity, including running.

What can you do to prevent running injuries?

First of all, you need to prepare well for the planned activity. Running “on the march” is not a good idea. First, stretch and warm up your muscles. Remember to invest in the right shoes (usually slightly larger than your foot size). You should also remember the “golden” rule of moderation and the method of small steps. “Grading” the intensity of efforts will reduce the risk of injury and injury.
