In Ukraine, which is fighting against Russian aggression, considerable funds are spent on the maintenance of Russian prisoners of war. This was announced by Deputy Minister of Justice Olena Vysotskaya, Ukrinform reports.
“Last year it was difficult for us to answer this question. (about the amount of money that costs the maintenance of one prisoner of war per month. - Auth.), because the number of prisoners of war was constantly changing and it was difficult to calculate a certain amount. There are expenses for clothing, medical care, food, utilities, as well as for the arrangement of the place of detention, personnel, and security. So when we talked about three thousand hryvnias a month for the maintenance of one Russian prisoner of war, we took into account the cost of food and utilities. It was a very rough calculation and incorrect, since the amount did not take into account the remuneration of personnel, security, convoy, etc. So if we talk about the more or less normally calculated cost of keeping a prisoner in the camp at the end of 2022, taking into account the provision of the camp, with taxes, salaries, utility costs, this amount is about 10 thousand hryvnias per prisoner per month.she said.
According to the Deputy Minister, the maintenance of a prisoner in a pre-trial detention center in 2021 cost about 130 thousand a year. Accordingly, for one detainee - about 11 thousand hryvnia per month.
“We have created conditions for Russian prisoners that fully meet the requirements of the Geneva Convention, which, by the way, is not as specific as we would like. It has very general declarative things. For example, prisoners of war are supposed to communicate with relatives through letters. Instead, we offered IP-telephony, which is more convenient and faster than writing a letter. This is just one example, but we have solved many issues that are not answered in the convention, and now we can share our experience.”Vysotskaya said.
As wrote, earlier the ombudsman told how the Russians mock the captured Ukrainians. Russia also refuses to provide information about “civilian” Ukrainians being held captive.
One of the Ukrainian fighters, who was in Russian captivity, told FACTS about the conditions of being in captivity.
