On Thursday, February 23, the return matches of the 1/16 finals of the Europa League were held. Donetsk “Shakhtar” after the victory over “Rennes” in Warsaw (2:1) came to France.

Europa League. 1/16 finals. return match

Rennes (France) - Shakhtar (Ukraine) - 2:1 (penalty shootout - 4:5)

“Miner”: Trubin, Hemp, Bondar, Matvienko, Mikhailichenko, Stepanenko (Nazarina, 100), Zubkov (Kelsey, 112), Bondarenko, Sudakov, Topalov (Dzhurasek, 79), Traore (Sikan, 80).

Goals: Ekambi (52), Salah (106) - Beloslon (119, in goal).

First match - 1:2

Before the match in a city in western France, it became known that the sponsors of Rennes had allocated 100,000 euros to buy an ambulance that would go to Ukraine and help at the front. The French club also arranged a gala dinner before the game, at which the leadership of Rennes organized a fundraiser for our country, which has been holding back the pressure of the aggressors for a year now.

As for the match itself, the hosts were not going to make any gifts on the football field, and were seriously determined to go to the next round. And if in the first half the audience did not see the head, then soon after the resumption of the game, Rennes was able to open an account when Ekambi managed to break through Trubin.

And then sharp moments arose at both gates, but the showdown turned into extra time. In the 106th minute, the hosts scored again - Doku broke through on the right flank, shot into the goalkeeper’s line, from where Salah shot through the already empty goal.

The Rennes players were so happy about the second goal they scored, they seemed to have already won the match. But the Pitmen fought to the end and were rewarded in the 119th minute - Djurasek “launched” the ball into the penalty area, and there Belosion, trying to prevent Kelsey from playing, sent the ball behind a high arc into his own net.

After such a turn of events, the psychological advantage was already on the side of Shakhtar, and in the penalty shootout, success smiled on the wards of Igor Jovicevich. Trubin showed himself brilliantly, parrying three (!) shots from the mark (the Donetsk team failed to score Bondar and Sikan), and thus led the Ukrainian club to the 1/8 finals.

In other return matches of the 1/16 finals of the Europa League, the following results were recorded: “Midtylland” (Denmark) - “Sporting” (Portugal) - 0:4 (the first match - 1:1); “Monaco” (France) - “Bayer” (Germany) - 2:3 (3:2, penalty shootout - 3:5); “Nantes” (France) - “Juventus” (Italy) - 0:3 (1:1); PSV (Netherlands) - Sevilla (Spain) - 2:0 (0:3); Manchester United (England) - Barcelona (Spain) - 2:1 (2:2); “Roma” (Italy) - “Salzburg” (Austria) - 2:0 (0:1); “Union” (Germany) - “Ajax” (Netherlands) - 3:1 (0:0).

We add that the draw for the 1/8 finals of the Europa League will take place on Friday, February 24, at the UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland (beginning at 13:00 Kyiv time).

Earlier reported that “Dnepr-1” without Dovbik could not score AEK and flew out of the League of Conferences.
