Iga Sventek unexpectedly said goodbye to the US Open in the fourth round. The leader of the rating lost to Elena Ostapenko. After the meeting, the Pole did not hide her surprise at the defeat. She couldn’t explain why she was so weak. She also commented on the loss of the first position in the ranking of Arina Sobolenko.
Iga Swiatek says goodbye to the US Open 2023. The representative of Poland lost to Elena Ostapenko, although she won the first set (3:6, 6:3, 6:1). Although the Latvian is the winner of Roland Garros 2017 and has never lost to the polka, the last match between the ladies took place before Sventek became the leader of the ranking.
Iga Sventek shocked by loss at US Open 2023
In a duel in New York, Sventek was able to fight Ostapenko only in the first set. At that moment, the opponent was a little nervous, which manifested itself in unforced errors. In the following games, she did almost none of this. The Latvian was able to find the answer to all of Swiatek’s weapons. On the contrary, it didn’t work. In the third set, Sventek could only actively watch Ostapenko play her tennis. One game did not change anything in the image of the set. Sventek after the match still did not hide her surprise with the result of the match. She drew attention to the fact that at some point she lost control of the fight.
- I’m surprised that my level has changed so dramatically, because usually when I play badly, it happens from the very beginning, and then I somehow catch up or just solve the problem. This time it was quite the opposite. I really don’t know what happened. Suddenly I lost control. I need to watch this match and check, because I really don’t know why I started making so many mistakes,” Swiatek said at a press conference, quoted by sport.pl.
Iga Sventek comments on the downgrade
Sventek, regardless of further decisions, will lose her position as the leader of the WTA rankings, which she held for 75 weeks. From next Monday, the world’s first rocket will be Arina Sobolenko from Belarus. The Pole admitted that the loss of her position affects her, but admitted that recently the struggle to retain the seat has been extremely tense.
“It meant a lot to me. It was great. On the other hand, this last stage of defending the position of leader was quite exhausting. I still have to do what my staff and great players like Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Rafa Nadal say. We need to focus on tournaments, not rankings, ”admitted the 22-year-old player.
Elena Ostapenko will play with Coco Gauff
Despite the loss in the fourth round, Iga Sventek noted the positive aspects of her performance at the US Open this year. The Pole now wants to focus on rest and preparation for the next, final part of the season. Last year’s winner Ostapenko will face Coco Gauff in the quarterfinals.
