Iga Swiatek and Hubert Hurkacz ensured that Poland reached the semi-finals of the United Cup in Biersbahn. In the decisive mixed doubles match, the White-Reds defeated Camilla Rosatello and Lorenzo Musetti. As a result of the whole match, Poland beat Italy with a score of 3:2.
The Polish tennis team has been fighting against Italy since Wednesday morning to reach the semi-finals of the United Cup in Brisbane. A very fierce rivalry began with the meeting between Damian Michalski and Lorenzo Musetti, in which, unfortunately, our representative quickly fell.
The next in line was Iga Sviontek, who expectedly won, although a lot of trouble awaited her along the way. With the score tied, Hubert Hurkach entered the court and faced a very difficult opponent - Matteo Berrettini. The clash of both players was very equal, but in the last set the Italian dominated the Pole and won with a score of 2:1 (6:4, 3:6 and 6:3).
Magda Lynette left us in the game
Fourth in line was Magda Linett, who was under a lot of pressure, because her possible loss would mean, most likely, the relegation of the Polish national team, and Italy would have reached the semi-finals. Those who in the past have accused the explorer of sometimes having mental breakdowns in difficult matches, this meeting proved them wrong.
Our representative dominated in the first set. On her serve, she won 86% of the games, used two break points and scored 6/6 “points” at the net. She rarely made unforced errors. As a result, she won the first set with a score of 6:1. The second part was formal. The Polka lost only two games, and won the whole match with a score of 2:0 (6:1 and 6:2), thanks to which we drew 2:2 in the match between Poland and Italy.
United Cup. Swiatek and Gurkacz take Poland to the semi-finals
The outcome of this meeting was decided only by a clash in the mixed doubles, in which Iga Swiatek and Hubert Gurkach met with Camilla Rosatello and Lorenzo Musetti. The White-Reds started this meeting with honor. The Italian pair was broken three times by our representatives in the first set and therefore lost 1:6 in 24 minutes.
At the beginning of the second set, at 40:15 for Iga Swiatek and Hubert Gurkacz, the match was interrupted due to heavy rain. Although the court was closed, the wind was blowing raindrops into the half of the field where the Italians were playing, which posed a threat. After the resumption of this meeting, Rashinyan and Wroclaw completed the formalities and won 6:2. Thus, Byalo-Chervoni secured access to the semi-finals, where they will meet with the USA.
