Prolonged COVID can lead to disability. It’s more dangerous than cancer

Must read

The long duration of COVID and its effects are still a mystery, but subsequent research is bringing scientists closer to its discovery. However, the conclusions of the analyzes are not very optimistic.

Specialists of the Office of Veterans Affairs st. The Louis Health System has reviewed the medical records of more than 140,000 veterans over the age of sixty who have had a coronavirus infection. They compared them with the results of 6 million people of the same age without confirmed infection. They then began a three-year follow-up of all the volunteers.

Prolonged COVID combined with hospitalization increases the risk of suicide and alcoholism

The study found that people who fought COVID-19 infection were more likely to die prematurely in the first 6 months after getting sick than people without symptoms of the infection. What’s more, over the next two years, the group of patients diagnosed with the infection were at higher risk of developing more than 25 different health problems. The list includes blood clots, bradycardia (a slower-than-normal heartbeat), fatigue, diabetes, gastrointestinal complaints, sleep disturbances, muscle, headache, and joint pain, hearing and smell loss, and autonomic nervous system dysfunction.

In people hospitalized with Covid-19 infection, the health situation was even worse. In their case, we are dealing with an increased risk of developing more than 50 diseases and disorders within two years of infection. We are talking not only about the problems listed above, but also about the difficulties of cognitive activity (memory and concentration). It also turned out that these patients have an increased risk of alcoholism and drug addiction. They also reported suicidal thoughts more often. Coronavirus is more dangerous than cancer in this regard.

COVID-19 remains a major threat

The results of the analyzes, as experts emphasize, well reflect the real state of affairs and are consistent with what can be observed in the course of clinical work. The scale of the consequences of COVID-19 does not surprise doctors, although it frightens them at the same time. The cited study shows that the coronavirus (despite the end of the pandemic) should not be underestimated. Even a seemingly harmless infection without unpleasant symptoms can have very serious consequences in the future and expose patients to loss of physical fitness, as well as premature death. The constant mutations of the virus and the emergence of new variants of the pathogen, such as the recently discovered Pirola or Eris, also pose a great danger.
