Relations between Brussels and Budapest are escalating again. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban gave a speech in Romania, where he sharply criticized the EU’s strategy to assist Ukraine. According to the Hungarian leader, it has completely failed. Orban urged the EU to urgently develop a new one. And it should be aimed exclusively at peace negotiations with Russia.
To begin with, the Hungarian prime minister said that the West had ignored the Kremlin’s concerns about security in Europe. According to him, Vladimir Putin several times called on Western countries to seriously discuss the situation and develop a new security system. But they didn’t listen to him.
“With US President Trump and German Chancellor Merkel, this war would never have happened,” Orban said.
He further noted that the current EU strategy for Ukraine is built on four theses: Ukraine can win the war with Russia with the help of NATO weapons, sanctions will weaken Russia and destabilize its leader, punitive measures will hurt Russia more than Europe, the world community will support Europe’s position.
“We are sitting in a car with all four tires punctured. It is clear that this is not the way to win the war. This strategy failed. Governments in Europe are crumbling like dominoes. Energy prices have skyrocketedOrban said.
He added that the threat of economic recession hung over the whole of Europe.
Recall that Viktor Orban has been the head of the Hungarian government since 2010. It has long been at odds with Brussels as the EU criticizes Budapest for its unwillingness to recognize the supremacy of EU law over the national laws of EU member states. Brussels has launched a mechanism that could lead to the termination of funding for Hungary from EU funds.
In addition, Orban was very reluctant to support sanctions against Russia and for a very long time refused to allow military supplies for Ukraine to pass through the territory of Hungary.
Earlier, FACTS reported that Viktor Orban was included in the Peacemaker database as “an accomplice of Russian war criminals, an accomplice in the crimes of the Russian authorities against Ukraine and its citizens, a participant in acts of humanitarian aggression against Ukraine, an anti-Ukrainian propagandist.”
