Crazy premise and consistent marketing campaign for Elizabeth Banks’ cocaine bear paid off handsomely as the film had a strong impact on the box office in its opening weekend, beating the film’s original opening projection. The new action comedy has grossed a hefty $28 million worldwide.
Release Friday, February 24th cocaine bear topped the Friday box office chart on its first day in theaters with $8.6 million (including $2 million for Thursday previews). The True Story of “Cocaine Bear”
Story cocaine bear draws inspiration from a true story when 40kg of cocaine was lost from a drug-carrying plane on a flight from Colombia and crashed over the Chattahoochee National Forest in Georgia. The black bear found the contraband in the forest and ate it. Authorities later found the bear dead in the woods, and the cause of death was listed as one of the largest drug overdoses in history. Now, the stuffed bear is on display in Lexington, Kentucky under the nickname “Pablo Esco’s Bear” and is a unique attraction.
