Editor’s Note: The following are spoilers for Episode 16 of Season 2 of Abbott Elementary.
Last episode abbot elementary, titled “Teacher’s Conference”, aired on February 22, and it’s safe to say that a lot of happened. From our beloved Barbara (Sheryl Lee Ralph) and Melissa (Lisa Ann Walter) get drunk and have fun Jacob (Chris Perfetti) hanging out with a group of teachers from another school, there are a lot of things to watch out for. However, perhaps the most discussed point in this issue is V kiss between Grigory (Tyler James Williams) and Janine (Quinta Brunson), which many have been waiting for since the first season. However, despite the fact that the moment was very romantic, things were not so simple.
Slow burning between Janine and Gregory
We know this whole thing with Gregory and Janine is an incredible game of waiting - a slow burn, so to speak - and it’s the perfect way to keep us on the show even stronger than we already are. From the moment we see their interaction in the first season, many have already assumed that something will happen between them due to Gregory’s obvious views on Janine. However, for most of this season, we see Janine in a long-term relationship with someone else, although she no longer feels the same spark. In the second season, two cute teachers are getting closer and closer, so that their feelings for each other are not far off. In fact, there’s even a moment in Valentine’s Day where the teachers as well as Mr. Johnson casually point out Janine’s crush on Gregory, the two just stupidly and amusingly ignoring it. Moments like this make us believe they’re likely to be something in the future, and with the release of this recent episode, we can now say for sure.
Moments leading up to Janine and Gregory’s kiss
A recent episode follows our favorite Abbott teachers as they attend PECSA, a teacher conference over the weekend. The teachers talk about it at school, but Gregory says he won’t go because he’s taking Amber on a little vacation to make up for the Valentine’s Day gift. However, when he and Amber disagree with the actions Gregory planned, she breaks up with him, prompting him to go to PECSA instead.
At the hotel, Janine sees Gregory and learns about what happened. Janine then spends the rest of the day trying to cheer him up while the rest of the teachers go about their business. After a few drinks, Gregory slowly tells Janine about his insecurities and vice versa. They then sneak into an exhibit depicting a classroom of flowers. Janine says the flowers symbolize her career as a teacher and her love for her students. In doing so, plus a romantically decorated room, Gregory kisses Janine and she kisses him back.
Why Janine and Gregory don’t have it easy
The kiss was without a doubt the highlight of the episode, and many people breathed a sigh of relief. However, after the kiss, Janine and Gregory more or less tried to “throw him out” for several reasons. While the kiss is a welcome moment, the fact that it happened in this episode makes it more complicated. First of all, Amber literally just dumped Gregory, so it’s safe to say that he’s not at his most lucid yet. Secondly, Janine is dating Maurice (Vince Staples), a friend of Gregory. And thirdly, they are both teachers at the same school, and all these dates with my colleague usually end badly, as Barbara said. All of these things, it is important to consider, besides the fact that Janine and Gregory are stubborn people.
Janine and Gregory as a couple make a lot of sense, but in good old-fashioned sitcom fashion, that most likely won’t happen in the next few episodes. We will definitely see how they eliminate the stated causes one by one and delve into the possible consequences. That being said, it will take a while before viewers see their relationship come to life, but the good thing is we have many more episodes to go (plus another new season) so in the meantime we can see the Tension of will-they-not-they. will play a little longer, which is just as interesting, because it means that they are more satisfied that they unconsciously yearn for each other.
you can catch abbot elementary, which airs every Wednesday on ABC and is also available for streaming on Hulu.
