In the past year, many shows and films have been a real carnage due to the merger of Warner Bros with Discovery. New management brought new rules and consequently several fan-favorite features were removed regardless of the stage of production (hi, Bat Girl) or popularity. One of them was the creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joyscience fiction series Western world. The news took fans by surprise as the new season was not green-lit after the release of season 4 and the series was cancelled. In a new interview with Rolling Stone, the actor James Marsden called the cancellation a “disappointment”.

Marsden played a host named Teddy who is in love with Dolores; after a gruesome death in the second season, he was absent for the entire third season, and finally returned in the fourth season, much to the excitement of the fans. Upon his return, he seemed to know more about the world and Dolores herself, but the story never ended. “I’d be lying to you if I said that the way we ended Westworld wasn’t a disappointment,” Marsden said. “I will never speak without gratitude about any of my experiences, but it would be nice to be able to complete the story we wanted to finish.”

Among the reasons why Western world was canceled because it was an expensive show. The grandiose sets, stellar cast, and seemingly declining popularity of the show all combined to force the WBD to shut it down for good. Marsden says he “completely understands[s] it’s an expensive show and big shows have to have big audiences to justify the expense, I just want it to be something more than a financial success.” sit at home and eagerly wait for the next episode as a fan.” Of course, the world woven by Nolan and Joy captured the audience with its ups and downs and constantly returned its characters in new avatars.

After the show was canceled, it was also pulled from HBO Max, but Marsden is still hopeful that the series will possibly be completed: “Who knows, maybe there is some world where it can be completed somehow. Maybe it’s just wishful thinking, because I know we had plans to finish it the way we wanted.” But Marsden isn’t the only one, as fans are still rallying around to get their hands on Season 5, although there are no updates on the series’ status.
