It’s not a secret - Wednesday is a global phenomenon for Netflix. Spin-off of The Addams Family featuring Jenna Ortega Sent to a boarding school for the supernaturally gifted as a teenager, Wednesday Addams was breaking records across the board for a streamer.
This week, it became just the third movie to surpass 1 billion watch hours on Netflix in a single month - only squid game and fourth season very strange things have also done so to date. Not only that, but the show also passed Ryan MurphyX Dahmer become the second most watched English-language Netflix series of all time. Given these facts, it’s safe to say that the series will be renewed for a second season. Not so fast.
Speaking to Variety, Netflix’s head of screenwriting for the US and Canada, Peter Friedlander will not depend on whether the show was officially approved for a second season, but he had a hard time expressing his praise and admiration for a show that very quickly became not just enjoyable, but culturally significant and viral. especially thanks to the TikTok trend in which the environment dances to Lady GagaBloody Mary.
You may know what I’m about to say, but I don’t have anything to confirm at the moment. I am optimistic about Wednesday. We’ll leave it at that.
It’s strange, because the sensations are different, but it’s only two weeks before the launch of “Wednesday”. So we are still at the very beginning of this cultural phenomenon. And there is a lot to absorb and learn about it. It’s amazing how quickly something like this can blow up on Netflix, and there’s a lot you want to hear from fans and viewers alike. It’s not just a dance, it’s people dressing up, buying makeup and wanting to look like Wednesday Addams. For me, rebirth is something that has been in culture for a long time, but has never been expressed that way. This is what we want to study and understand why this is such a phenomenon. And I think a lot of that has to do with Jenna’s extraordinary performance at center. But this supporting cast, across the board, are legends: Gwendolyn Christie, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Luis Guzman and Christina Ricci!
Friedman went on to praise the marketing strategy chosen by the team to promote the show, adding, “The marketing approach to Wednesday hissed. Whether it was billboards saying ‘horn if you died inside’ or you were at the airport and saw these TSA messages inside the bucket, they were everywhere and they really contributed to making it such a hit.”
Wednesday currently streaming on Netflix. Watch the trailer for the series below.
