Lionsgate has finally released the official trailer for the breathtaking, suspenseful psychological thriller. Alice dear. Producer Mary Nighy, Anna Kendrick absolutely shines in the clip as a woman suffering from a psychologically abusive relationship.

At the beginning of the trailer, we are introduced to the titular Alice (Kendrick), a woman who has been asked by her friends to go upstate for her birthday to relax a bit as a girl. The music throughout the trailer pairs brilliantly with the anxiety already seething in the first few moments as Alice lies to her boyfriend Simon (Charlie Carrick) about his girlfriend’s plans, instead saying that she needs to go on a business trip. Although the ladies enjoy their time away, their good mood is quickly cut short when Simon discovers Alice’s lies, leaving her no choice but to leave early.

As her friends try to talk her into staying and present her with some sort of intervention for her abuse, everyone is knocked off their feet when Simon arrives at the cabin. The music pushes the drama along with the revelation that the girl has gone missing, which gives Simon a reason to look through Alice’s emails for the truth about her business trip. The tension reached an all-time high in the final moments of the trailer as Alice lost her mind as she went into a panic attack, looking for answers about what to do with her life, her boyfriend and friends. Author Alanna Francis, Alice dear also stars Kaniehtio Horn, Wunmi Mosakuas well as Mark Vinnik.

The film had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival back in September. Perry Nemiroff met with Kendrick, Horne, Carrick, and Nighy to discuss an angst-filled history of abuse and the restoration of personal power. For Kendrick in particular, the role is a major departure from her typical fare, which the Academy Award-nominated actress says was the fact that drew her to the project.

Speaking to Nemiroff, Kendrick said she wants to move on from her old “bag of tricks” and move on to something less “heartbreaking.” Referring to her work as Alice as an “internal representation,” she went on to say that it was difficult for her to move away from the thought of constantly checking in with the crew to see how things were going on the monitors and, instead, being fully present in the scenes. Because her past work allowed Kendrick to gain the knowledge of how to hit every spot perfectly, she says that with her role as Alice came a certain freedom that allowed her to really lean on and trust herself to make sure her performance and success story shone through.

You can catch a trailer for Alice dear below. The film will hit theaters in Los Angeles on December 30th, with a national release on January 20th.
