Superman is the complete archetype of everything a superhero can and should be. His lineage, rise to power, and supporting cast set the standard for all future heroes, especially his gallery of rogue villains.

While Lex Luthor, Brainiac, General Zod, Bizarro, and Doomsday are considered Superman’s most notorious foes, he has a far more exciting and varied gallery of rogues than many casual fans realize. Given that Superman comics alternate between contemporary existential heroism and silly Silver Age epics, many of its villains, while less known to the general public, help maintain that tonal balance by serving its story in unique ways.

Cyborg Superman

Hank Henshaw was created in 1990 but became a villain during the reign of the Supermen in 1993. After Superman’s death at the hands of Doomsday, several superhumans arrived in the form of a man of steel, all claiming to be real.

This variant claimed to be a memory-wiped cybernetic clone of Superman, with his DNA and vague memories managed to convince Lois Lane. But it is soon revealed that he is a former astronaut who blamed Superman for the solar flare that destroyed his spaceship and turned his body into a skeleton.

Mr Mkhizptlyk

He is one of his less intimidating enemies, but can be dangerous under certain circumstances. This little elf-like man is an imp from the 5th dimension that travels to Earth every 90 days. Upon arrival, he focuses all his energies on making Superman’s life a real thorn in the back, irritating him with bizarre pranks or completely insane reality-warping schemes that terrorize the city of Metropolis.

He can only be defeated by sending him back to his home dimension by tricking him or making him say his name backwards, where he is stuck for another 90 days. While campy and somewhat of a pest, he is also one of the most endearing supporting characters in the Man of Steel.

Metallo

At first glance, John Corben is nothing more than a petty thug, but beneath his human appearance lies a dangerous threat to any Kryptonian. He started his career as a journalist by day and a criminal by night who was involved in a life-threatening accident.

The scientist saved him by turning him into a cybernetic creature with a kryptonite heart. Although said heart is his best known and most used asset, it has several unique abilities. For example, his lead body can withstand any power of most metahumans, nuclear blasts can be fired from his hands, and he can activate the unique ability to remain still on any surface.

Parasite

A purple freak of nature who earned the title of Superman’s deadliest enemy long before Judgment Day arrived. Although his personality has changed over the years, his origins are usually due to him once working as a janitor in the STAR Laboratories exposed to alien radiation occasionally found by the Man of Steel.

Upon exposure, he transforms into the metahuman equivalent of sentient leaching, absorbing the mental and physical energy of the bodies and elements around him in a constant state of hunger. Through this, he can access people’s memories and even the powers of other superhumans he drains.

toymen

While they remember Super Friends Challenge In the animated series, in his jester costume, he looks more like a sharply dressed yet evil inventor who uses toys as part of his criminal schemes in the comics. He is a villain who had a male personality, but his most famous personality is the Winslow personality of Percival Schott.

Depending on the tone of the story, Toyman ranges from a dim-witted mad scientist to a psychologically unstable but somewhat tragic figure. Every time a person tries to save his reputation, something tragic usually drives him into obscurity.

Manchester Black

He is a telekinetic British punk who, in his worst days, alternated between anti-hero and outright villain. He first appeared as the leader of an anti-hero team called The Elite. This group had anti-authority views and a dangerously more cynical outlook than most superheroes, more than willing to kill any criminal they caught.

After Manchester Black’s defeat by Superman and a short stint in Suicide Squad, he decided to prove that the philosophy of Clark Kent is wrong. So far, he’s only been able to prove himself wrong, as Clark’s optimism wins.

Titano

Outwardly, this creature looks like nothing more than King Kong fake. But while the resemblance is uncanny, this giant chimpanzee has a much more detailed origin and is more misunderstood than dangerous.

Originally a simple chimpanzee for the space program, he was bombarded with cosmic radiation during a test flight and became a giant menace that kidnapped Lois Lane and ascended the Daily Planet. While Titano was able to hold off the Man of Steel in his first appearance by being able to fire kryptonite lasers from his eyes, Superman ended up throwing him into a portal through space to the prehistoric past, finally making the giant ape happier than ever.

Livewire

Introduced in the 90s animated series as Superman’s answer to Harley QuinnLivewire started out as a radio jockey named Leslie Willis who used her show to criticize the man of steel in order to keep her ratings up.

A severe storm damaged the stage during a live performance in a Metropolis park. Superman tried to help clean up, but a flash of lightning caused an electrical current to run through Krypton’s last son into Willis. Finding that it changed her appearance and gave her the ability to manipulate electricity, she vowed revenge on Superman, believing that he deliberately caused her accident.

Silver Banshee

Siobhan MacDougal was a girl who aspired to lead her Gaelic tribe after her father’s death. But when the ritual to gain leadership went wrong and she was dragged to the underworld, she was returned with the promise that she would receive an occult book, which was taken to Metropolis.

Although she is more focused on completing her mission, she will not hesitate to kill anyone who gets in her way. Perhaps her most distinctive features are her ghoulish appearance and signature death wail; if she knows a person’s full name, her scream can kill him and draw strength from his spirit.

ultrahumanite

Designed as the exact opposite of Superman, he is a supervillain with a brilliant mind but a fragile body. While initially bearing some resemblance to the last son of Krypton’s nemesis, one key feature that helps distinguish him from the likes of Lex Luthor is his frequent need to transplant his mind into different bodies.

In the Silver Age, he transplanted his brain into his most popular body, an albino gorilla. Finally, in one notable scheme in the modern era, he temporarily succeeded in taking over the entire world, causing every superpowered being to become an extension of his consciousness.
