These strange smells can portend a car breakdown. What are the most worrisome?

Must read

The vehicle does not smell of anything. However, some odors should be a concern. They may be a sign of failure. We study car smells together with experts.

Even in a well-maintained car, an unexpected malfunction can occur. A common symptom is an unusual smell. It is worth paying attention to what kind of smell appears in the cabin or outside the vehicle. In this way, more serious consequences, including even spontaneous combustion of the car, can be avoided. Q Service Castrol mechanics talk about unusual smells in the car.

The smell of exhaust gases in the cabin. Check the condition of the exhaust system

The appearance of an ugly, unpleasant and suffocating smell of exhaust gases inside the car can be caused by a leaky exhaust pipe. Another reason is related to the appearance of corrosion on the elements of the exhaust system (for example, a pipe, muffler cans, worn braids and cracks in the manifold). A car with a leaky exhaust system will not pass the vehicle inspection.

How to extend the life of the exhaust system? In this case, the user, unfortunately, has little effect. However, it should be remembered that the elements of the exhaust system corrode the fastest in cars operated mainly for short distances in city traffic. Frequent temperature changes - heating and cooling the exhaust system - shorten its service life.

Water vapor also accumulates in the vehicle’s exhaust, which causes corrosion of system components. What else can you do besides avoid traveling short distances? Among other things, carefully overcome speed bumps, bumps or other defects in the road, due to the fact that the exhaust of the car is subject to any mechanical damage.

Smell of burnt plastic or rubber. Check the car’s electrical system

If there is a strong smell of burnt plastic or rubber, check the car’s electrical system. It is possible that one of its components has shorted out. The reaction must be immediate - even a small short circuit can make car repairs expensive.

Smell of fuel or oil. See if anything drips

One of the reasons for the smell of fuel or oil can be a leaky fuel supply or engine lubrication system, and often the fuel leak itself. Oil or other liquids dripping onto hot exhaust system components can ignite the vehicle. The smell of fuel can also be a sign of many other problems. It indicates defects in the tank ventilation system, a hole in the pipe connecting the tank to the plug, as well as a hole in the tank itself. Any of the above defects can pose a danger to the driver and passengers, so they should be fixed as soon as possible.

Musty and damp smell. Wet items inside the car

A musty and damp smell usually means that water has gotten inside the car. Wet upholstery materials can be a breeding ground for fungus and spores, and wet carpets or seat sponges will accelerate the corrosion of the car’s metal parts, including the floor. Poorly maintained and wet car parts can also be a source of electrical problems (short circuits, tarnished contacts, etc.). To solve the problem, you must first find the source of the leak. It usually appears on the window and sunroof seals, doors, trunk lid or antenna. Older cars also have holes in the chassis. On the other hand, an unpleasant moldy smell, which is usually felt after turning on the air conditioner, may indicate that the ventilation ducts are dirty and the cabin filter needs to be replaced.
