Rolls-Royce has unveiled the Black Badge Cullinan “Blue Shadow” from a private collection that explores the beauty of space. In creating this unique model, Rolls-Royce’s cutting-edge engineering was inspired by the Karman Line, the invisible boundary of the Earth (62 miles/100 kilometers above the surface), where our planet’s atmosphere ends and outer space begins.
In this region, the blue sky we see on Earth dissolves into the darkness of space, creating an intense dark blue zone where darkness becomes dominant.
This new interpretation of the new Bespoke Black Badge Cullinan is strictly limited to only 62 pieces worldwide, one for every mile from the Earth to the Karman Line.
Amazing shades of blue
The new bespoke exterior paint “Stardust Blue” captures the deep blue color of Earth’s upper atmosphere. The finish of the thermal plates used to protect the Space Shuttle from intense heat during reentry is reminiscent of the satin grille trim and aerodynamic bumper inserts.
Inspired by the materials used in spacecraft, the Spirit of Ecstasy figure has been 3D printed on titanium and finished with a thin layer of blue lacquer that adds a pearly sheen and highlights the grainy texture of the titanium. The infinity Black Badge logo and the Blue Shadow private collection name are engraved with the spirit of ecstasy and filled with Charles Blue. The exterior aesthetics are complemented by lightly tinted Blue Shadow wheels covered in translucent paint.
Interior from a different angle
On the Karman line, the visible edge of the earth’s atmosphere looks like a blue halo. This transition from blue skies to cosmic darkness is captured in the painted dashboard and door panels of the Blue Shadow model. They were created using six coats of paint, combining five shades of blue with a deep black tone for a three-dimensional effect. The final touch is a layer of clear lacquer with blue and clear glass particles added for added depth and brilliance - the proportions are precisely defined to a fraction of a percent: exactly 0.05 percent. The instrument panel is complemented by a Bespoke watch dedicated to the Private Collection series, with blue anodized details and Blue Shadow engraving.
Headliner “On the Edge of Space”
With the Blue Shadow version, Rolls-Royce takes the famous Starlight headliner to the next level: an intricately embroidered moon, surrounded by multiple “stars”, teleports passengers to the edge of space. Reproducing the cratered lunar surface in three dimensions, the embroidery consists of five different colors of thread, each applied using a different technique to create a unique texture. In total, the embroidery is created using 250,000 individual stitches, a process that takes a full two days.
Filling the cabin with a soft glow, the Starlight headlining contains a total of 1,183 “stars” - 799 white and 384 blue - each individually inserted into the leather “canvas” through perforated holes, finely drawn in chalk and perforated by hand. To add to the mystique and atmosphere of the headliner, the twinkling effect of the fiber optic “stars” has been further enhanced for a more “glamorous” glow.
New canvas and perforated leather
For the first time in Rolls-Royce history, the front and rear seats feature a unique perforated design inspired by the view of Earth from space. The pattern consists of tiny perforations in the skin, which together give the impression of organic, ever-changing clouds swirling over continents and oceans.
These holes are made in two different sizes: smaller ones (only 0.8 mm in diameter) form the land, and slightly larger ones (1.2 mm) define the sea; the voids of the skin between them are clouds. Each seat has over 75,000 holes, each individually positioned. It took two weeks and five tests to develop the design before it reached the highest level of quality required by the Rolls-Royce Bespoke Collective.
Custom accessories
For the Black Badge Cullinan “Blue Shadow”, the Bespoke Collective team has created a series of unique accessories. The exclusive car cover is a continuation of the pattern seen on the seats. To accompany the driver and passengers on their adventures, a unique suitcase set is available, which belongs to the colors of the Private Collection. Customers can also order a 1:8 scale replica of their full size black Cullinan “Blue Shadow” badge with fully functioning exterior and interior lighting, doors that open and close, and an interior that recreates every detail of the collection, including custom lighting. A collection of illuminated door sills.
All 62 copies have already found their buyers from all over the world.
