Is it time to switch to summer tires?

Must read

The first rays of the sun, plus temperature, dry asphalt and a light spring breeze - the beginning of the eternal debate about when to change tires. From all sides, the questions are “is it already”, “still be patient”, “what if it’s winter again?”. We advise whether it is time to switch to summer tires.

March is usually the time when the first signs of spring appear, say goodbye to winter and solve the dilemma of changing tires from winter to summer. Despite the fact that many drivers (especially those who drive in cities on a daily basis) are increasingly opting for all-season tires, queues form in front of the vulcanization layers during this period. Should we decide to change tires now?

When to change?

According to the portal Autokult.pl, there are several factors that should determine the timing of tire replacement. The first is, first of all, a long-term weather forecast, which can be a clear signal whether we should wait for the return of winter, or snow and sub-zero temperatures will not return to us.

Too cold or too warm

The most important factor in deciding whether to switch from winter tires to summer tires should be temperature issues. According to tire manufacturers and curing experts, winter tires should not be used when the average long-term temperature is around 7 degrees Celsius. As the editors of Autokult.pl emphasize, this is due to the properties of the rubber used in the individual tyres. Winter tires (usually softer than summer tires) tend to “float” at temperatures above 7 degrees, while summer tires tend to harden too much at lower temperatures. Then such tires lose traction much faster.

Long-term forecast for March/April

According to long-term weather forecasts, heat waves are not expected in the near future. The typical March temperature of about 10 degrees Celsius will continue until the end of April. Low temperatures at night - about 0 degrees - is also a signal not to part with winter tires for a while.
