The ski season is in full swing, and many people go to the slopes in their own car. How to pack your gear and travel safely in winter conditions? Some tips have been prepared by safety driving instructors.

Transporting skis can be a daunting task, but they should never be transported loose in a vehicle. Skis must be connected and well secured so as not to create a hazard in the event of sudden braking or collision.

– Roof boxes are the best for transporting skis. In a plastic container placed on the roof, not only skis will fit, but also poles, boots and ski clothing. However, before packing the box, it is worth checking the permissible loading weight, and especially the permissible roof load according to the car manufacturer, say instructors from the Renault Driving School.

What else is worth packing?

If we are going on a longer trip, we must be prepared for various contingencies, and especially in case of going abroad, check if we have the necessary equipment. Even if you are traveling only in Poland, it is worth having a reflective vest with you. Although we do not face a penalty for not having it, it makes it safer for the driver to get out of the car, for example, after an emergency stop. You will need a mobile phone to call for help in case of a collision or breakdown, so you should charge the battery and take a car charger or power bank with you before you leave.

In case we get stuck in the snow, we can also pack a small shovel, as well as bits of old rug or cat litter to put under the wheels.

In the event of a breakdown or very difficult weather conditions, a longer stop may be required. Therefore, it does not hurt to carry a thermos with hot tea, chocolate bars or a blanket.

Customize your driving style

If the road surface is covered with snow, you need to slightly change your driving style.

– If you are having trouble starting, you can shift into second gear and gently release the clutch to avoid slipping. Also, when picking up speed, it is worth staying in a higher gear, which will allow you to better control the car. The speed must match the driving conditions. If you drive too fast, you risk losing control of your vehicle. We also have to take into account that on ice or snow, the braking distance is much longer, says Zbigniew Veseli from the Renault Driving School.

In this case, all maneuvers should be performed as smoothly as possible. This is especially true for braking, steering and acceleration. If possible, try to brake with the engine, i.e. with a reduction gear, avoiding a sharp application of the brake.
