If we are going on a journey during which we may encounter impassable and snowy roads, it is worth getting snow chains that will make it easier for us to overcome such routes. In addition, if there is a C-18 sign on a snowy road, i.e. order to use snow chains, without them it is impossible to continue driving.
Chains improve traction in difficult road conditions, on snowy and icy surfaces. This is especially noticeable when driving uphill. – When driving without them, the wheels will slip in place. But even on flat roads, chains shorten the braking distance,” explains Adam Bernard, director of the Renault Driving School.
Chains on drive wheels
Snow chains must be fitted to at least two drive wheels. Their size must match the size of the wheel. Steel meshes differ in the pattern of the links on the tire, as well as in the material from which they are made. The more metal weaves on the tread, the easier it will be to ride on a snowy surface. The best chains are those whose links have sharp edges that cut into snow or ice.
Dry (and warm) exercise
Before leaving, it is worth practicing in installing chains and it is best to do this in a place where there is no severe frost and the wheels of our car are not half covered in snow. - When we do this for the first time, such an activity may seem difficult and complicated, but after several attempts we will get more practice, which, in conditions where we really have to use these elements, can save us a lot of nerves, time and frozen hands, - advises Adam Bernard.
When driving with snow chains, do not exceed the maximum speed recommended by the manufacturer (usually around 40 km/h) and, above all, drive in a way that allows you to control the vehicle. You should also avoid sudden acceleration and deceleration. Chains should be removed when returning to asphalt. Otherwise, such driving on open asphalt can lead to damage to the road surface, damage to the tires and the chains themselves. It is also illegal because chains can only be used on snowy roads. After use, these elements should be washed in warm water and dried.
