In the Dikankovsky district court (Poltava region), the hearing of the case on the death of a private in a military unit has ended. The accident happened in June 2022. Then the captain accidentally killed a soldier with a shot from a machine gun.
As it became known to from the materials of the criminal proceedings, in June last year, the head of the food service, Vitaly Zhilun, returned to the location of the military unit after a three-day stay on combat duty. The captain admitted that at the moment when the irreparable happened, he was drunk.
“I drank 250 grams of moonshine. I honestly confess. Arrived after combat duty at the forefront. Wanted to rest. Drank and lay down to rest. The soldiers behind the wall were talking very loudly. And then I went out and warned them that if they didn’t calm down, then I would shoot next time. ”.
The soldiers fell silent for a while, and then began talking loudly again. Captain Zhilun took a machine gun and went out to the soldiers. “I didn’t mean to shoot anyone - said the captain in court. - I fired down and the bullet should have bounced out into the street.”. However, the bullet, hitting the concrete floor, snarled in the face of one of the soldiers.
The wounded soldier was taken to the Kiev military hospital. He was in a coma for several days and then died without regaining consciousness. Captain Zhilun during this time collected 20 thousand hryvnias for the treatment of a soldier and transferred this money to his father.
During the trial, Captain Zhilun did not immediately admit his guilt. He said that the soldier could die and not from his bullet. “There were enemy positions 24 kilometers from where we stood. From there, saboteurs could come and shoot“. But this version was destroyed by the results of the examination.
The officer was found guilty of the death of a soldier and, despite the fact that the prosecutor asked for the accused to be sentenced to seven years in prison, Zhilun was sentenced to five, ordered to pay moral damages in the amount of 400,000 hryvnia to the victims.
