On Monday, January 2, a German military expert, former NATO General Hans-Lothar Domrese (pictured) said he expects a ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia as early as this year. In an interview with Funke, he said: “Within 2023, we will have a truce.”
At the same time, the general assumes that in the coming months, both sides will launch new offensives in order to still try to achieve their military goals, but there will be a ceasefire in early summer, because by then Kyiv and Moscow will understand that further military operations are pointless, because they do not lead to gaining control over new territories.
“This will be the moment for ceasefire negotiations. All that remains is the possibility of concluding an agreement that will suit both parties. says Domrese.
Compromise, he said, could be achieved if President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky will refuse to immediately return Crimea and other occupied territories under the control of Kyiv. Domreze stressed that these territories should become Ukrainian again, but this will take time - a certain transition period for, say, 50 years. As an example, the general cited the story of the return of Hong Kong under Chinese control.
Military expert of the German Society for Foreign Policy on Russia and Security Andras Rach agrees with Domrese that truce talks between Ukraine and Russia will begin in the summer and end by the end of 2023. However, he gives another reason. Rach recalled that in 2024, the next presidential election should be held in Russia. The expert considers it unlikely that the Kremlin will wage an intense war in the run-up to and during these elections.
Earlier, FACTS reported that British General Ben Hodges considers the return of Crimea by Ukraine to be real in the summer of 2023. His forecast does not coincide with the opinion of German experts.
