For the International Volunteer Day, students, teachers, together with caring citizens, spent the whole day making trench candles for our soldiers. In total, they produced 5,359 products that will keep Ukrainian soldiers warm on the front lines. The event turned out to be so unique that it was recorded in the National Register of Records, because there has never been anything like it in Ukraine!
- A humanitarian headquarters has been created under our student trade union committee, of which I am the head. Accordingly, from the first day of the war, we were engaged in various kinds of support. In particular, they collected humanitarian aid, funds for the purchase of cars for the front line, various equipment. Only according to official information, about 400 students of our institution defend the country, as well as teachers with weapons in their hands, - told Chairman of the Trade Union of Students of KPI Igor Stepanyuk. - Since September, realizing that the cold is approaching, we started making trench candles. And as it happened, we realized that we are good at it, there is a big request. Therefore, we decided to arrange something grand for the International Volunteer Day. We consulted with the underlying asset and decided that we would set a record for the largest number of trench candles made per day. With them we will not only help the fighters, but we will further popularize the volunteer movement.
On my birthday, I opened a collection and collected funds for the registration of the record, because I wanted it to be official. In addition, we managed to attract a large amount of humanitarian aid in the form of paraffin. For you to understand, we needed more than a ton of it. Together with those who are not indifferent, they collected cans. It’s nice that not only students and employees of KPI joined us, just strangers came. In total, about 200 people were attracted to the record. Some came for a few hours, some at night, some worked with us from start to finish. And because there are so many wonderful people in our country, we managed to break the record in less than a day. We could have continued to work, we just ran out of paraffin and the jars were the wrong size.
— What was the technological process?
We all divided into groups, and each did a specific job. They cut the cardboard into strips 60 centimeters long, then twisted the cardboard into rolls and placed it in a jar. Then the candles were lit. It took a lot of time to transfer the candles from the melting shops to the hall where the counting was carried out. Despite being tired, they worked diligently.
“Now it’s difficult to volunteer, because because of the shelling of infidels, the capital suffers because of the lack of electricity. Did you feel it somehow on yourself?
- Yes. When we set the record, there were two blackouts and one air raid alert. But we worked on an electric stove. We had a generator, but it was not powerful, so it could only provide lighting and online broadcasting. The university administration provided us with Starlink, for which we are sincerely grateful. But as you can see, our nation is strong, so the enemy will not break. Warriors from the Bakhmut direction have already ordered the first thousand candles. So we send them. In addition, when registering the record, we held an auction and collected a certain amount of funds for the soldiers for a four-wheel drive vehicle.
