Shelley Long was in the midst of her time in Hollywood when she starred Troop Beverly Hills. She was still playing Diana in the timeless comedy of the 80s. To your health, and her star was clearly rising. Many reviews criticized Long for taking on the role, with some saying “she should have thrown out the full script”. Thank God that it is not, because without it it is impossible to imagine the film. She approached the role of Phyllis in a special way, deftly balancing her ability to be both overly theatrical and endearing. Many critics disliked this choice; they wanted this light-hearted children’s film to be a poignant statement about Beverly Hills’ elite. Yes, that’s what they wanted the Girl Scout troop PG movie to be. Regardless of what the critics say, her performance is still relevant and always worth quoting. “I may be new to some things, but I have a black belt in shopping!” maybe one of the best lines in the movie.

The costumes designed for Shelley Long’s character Phyllis Nefler made her a fashion icon. costume designer, Theodora Van Runkleapproached the costumes with artistic swagger. Best known for her Oscar-nominated costumes in the 1967s. Bonnie and Clyde, Van Runkle’s use of line, color, and “exaggerated silhouette” is still referenced in fashion blogs. The LA Times called the costume design “hilariously grotesque”, which is complete nonsense. The critics were wrong about that, period.

Is Troop Beverly Hills perfect movie? No. And, of course, there are moments in him that haven’t aged, but does he really deserve all the hate he gets? Of course not! This is a fun movie made for family viewing. So why did so many critics focus on the fact that it wasn’t a scathingly satirical take on the rich as they would like them to be? Again, for a PG family movie, this doesn’t make sense. What does make sense is the bias faced by films featuring women. Recent research has shown that gender bias in film criticism is a very real problem - see Dr. Martha Lausen’s study on female representation in the world of film criticism. The results were disturbing, but not at all surprising. According to her research, of the total number of critics in the US, 65% were men. The study also shows that men are more likely to rate films starring women poorly. This study was completed in 2022. With such statistics in recent years, one can only imagine how it was in the 1980s. So many reviews Troop Beverly Hills have descriptions that would lead anyone to believe that it is disgusting and should never have been done. This is simply not true.
Luckily, people have fallen in love with him and see him as a delightful campy comedy. This is a funny story that is enjoyable. It has contributed to pop culture in the same way as Clueless, Legally Blonde and other films. Troop Beverly Hills it’s a great mix of humor, fashion and sometimes wacky moments and deserves more recognition.
