Collider’s recent interview with Twisters writer Mark L. Smith confirmed that the upcoming Twister The spin-off will focus on a completely new story, the star of the film, Glen Powell answered some of our other burning questions. During a chat with Deadline, Powell revealed more about where audiences will be when the film hits theaters on July 19, 2024, as well as some helpful advice from an old colleague that he’s taking to heart.

Reinforcing what Smith said when he spoke with Collider’s Steve Weintraub earlier this month Powell confirmed that Twisters “definitely not a reboot,” adding, “We’re not trying to recreate the story of the first one. It’s a completely original story.” And if you were hoping to catch up Bill Paxton And Helen Hunt Characters to see if their reconciliation has weathered the coming storms, Powell has some bad news for you. “There are no characters in the original film so it’s not really a sequel,” he explains, noting that the film will feature a new team of storm chasers, “which is a different story these days.”

Thanks to his latest project Anyone but youcurrently playing in theaters, Powell took time to reflect on some wise words of advice what’s his Top Shot: Maverick co-star Tom Cruise Gave him. Although he did not note whether this information was specifically for Twisters or more general career advice, The task is impossible star told Powell: “If you want to make films of a certain size, scale and scope, you need to figure out what can unite all the people around the world and in each territory.” Linking this to how he approached a disaster film, Powell said, “And people against the weather - a very universal idea – how powerless we really are in the face of these catastrophic forces.”

Twisters almost reunite Glen Powell and Joseph Kosinski

Powell and Joseph Kosinski previously teamed up for the 2022 blockbuster. Top Shot: Maverick, And Twisters almost saw them reuniting for another head-turning project. In our interview, Smith said that he and TRON: Legacy Helmer came up with an idea Twisters together, with Kosinski initially named director. “We kind of got over it and then went to Steven Spielberg And Frank Marshall [the original executive producers on Twister], and then they signed the agreement,” Smith said. Universal refused. So I wrote it and it was ready and Spielberg was ready to go and he was excited and it had to be Joe.”

Unfortunately, the timing didn’t work out and Kosinski was roped into an untitled Formula 1 racing film with Brad Pitt, leaving the director’s chair open. How Lee Isaac Chang had already worked with Smith on another film, the director was invited to play Twisters And the rest is history.
