Throughout the Netflix miniseries Fall of the House of Usher Carla GuginoVerna’s mysterious character has a permanent connection animals. She often appeared in the form of a raven chasing a family of materialists from the sky and also took revenge on them. Rahul KohliLeo Asher, who took on the form of a cat. One scene even got particularly gruesome when she turned into a chimpanzee and brutally tore him apart. Camilla Kate Siegel. Gugino’s work in each of these segments is simply masterful as she seamlessly morphs into each creature, taking on the animal’s personality and movements. During an interview with Collider’s Perry Nemiroff during a recent episode of Nemiroff’s Ladies nightGugino talks about working with a movement coach Terry Notary and how he helped her perform every performance.
The notary has long been attached to major league of Hollywood stunts and moveshaving played motion capture roles in films such as Planet of the Apes franchise, Hobbit trilogy and Avengers: Infinity War And The final. He also previously worked together Fall of the House of Ushercreator and director Mike Flanagan, making him the perfect choice for the director’s latest Netflix series. In fact, says Gugino, “Mike said, ‘I think it would be great for you guys to work together,’ because [Flanagan and Notary] used to work together, and I thought it was mainly for the raven and the cat, and these more primal, obvious, obviously primates, and then it became [that] we worked on a lot of subtle things.”
Raven flies away
WITH Fall of the House of Usher being an adaptation short story the same name by Edgar Allan Poe, Flanagan made a few extra nods that the audience could connection with the legendary writer. The most recognizable to many will be the raven, the form Verna took over many episodes while closely observing the Ashers from above. Along with Notary, Gugino said that it was a collaboration between all branches of the creative team to give Verna a permanent raven appearance.
“One thing you’ll notice about the crow throughout, and I think it shows up a lot in the bartender, as well as in her later incarnation when she’s most like herself from a human perspective, which is the seventh and eighth episodes. You’ll have a big wingspan, and even the chairs and, and the whole wardrobe, there was definitely an idea that she also just doesn’t exist on the same plane as me and you, she’s very, everything is in the eyes, everything is very inclusive, she listens to everything and receives at the same time. So we’ve done some work with this.”

In the third episode entitled “Murder in the Rue Morgue” Camille L’Espanay Siegel snooped around my sister (T’Nia Miller) laboratory, with a mission to gather more information about what it does in its research. It is there that Camille meets her doom after Verna, who appears as a guard, goes full ape, turning into a chimpanzee and brutally attacking Asher’s brother. As mentioned, the monkey move is something that the notary is more than comfortable with due to his work on Planet of the Apes franchise. Recounting how a respected movement specialist helped her become one with the chimpanzees, Gugino said:
“I would say that the primate, the chimpanzee, was working with me when this happened [on] it’s broad, and we’ve also worked with actual crutches that make you move that way. And so when you see me jump on the table, a lot of it is work. It was really helpful.”
The perfect team
Calling the notary a “creative ally,” Gugino had nothing but positive things to say about her learning experience along with stuntman and movement coach on set Asher. Using similar but different approaches to performances, the actress explained why the pair made such a strong team:
“I think we were a really good company because my work usually comes from the inside out. I discover where I come from and then the physical manifestation of that and how it works, it’s not something from the outside in. He’s just a keen observer. And so physical markers and behavior are his golden mean. So it was a really natural combination for us., and we were both, I think, very inspired by each other’s work. Thus, I tend to be too nuanced in some matters. [ways], I never want to overdo anything. So that was really good for me because he really pushed me over the edge with some behavior and then I could always bring him back. But I knew where I could go without it being too much.”
