Mushroom Kingdom, here we go! After several months of intense marketing campaign, Movie Super Mario Bros. finally right around the corner. Judging by the trailers and posters, the film is filled with Easter eggs for every generation of Mario fans and also invites the next generation to discover it.
In what looks like a departure from the traditional Super Mario structure that follows Mario (who is played here Chris Pratt), and sometimes Luigi (Charlie Day) rescuing Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy) from the paws of Bowser (Jack Black), it seems that this time the whole gang will be involved in the adventure. The film even branches out to include Mario’s former nemesis and now video game star herself, Donkey Kong (Seth Rogen) as the characters explore all facets of the Mushroom Kingdom.
Ahead of the film’s April 7 release, critics took to Twitter to share their thoughts on the adaptation of the classic video game franchise and how Pratt provided the voice of Mario. what do they think of the end result?
Film critics Tim Gettys, Eric Davisand video game store GAMINGBible praised the film and how funny it was, especially for Nintendo and Mario fans, with Gettys singling out the music as the star of the show, and Davis highlighting Black’s performance as Bowser.

Tessa Smith from Mama’s Geeky also said the film was an Easter egg-filled love letter to video games, with particular excitement about how Princess Peach is portrayed as a “badass”. However, in sad news for the 2 players Among Us, she also added that Luigi was sidelined in the movie.

Some critics gave mixed praise, film critic deo. saying the movie wasn’t great, then adding that it was perfect and giving it a 10 out of 10. Andre Segers from GameXplain called it a delightful thrill ride despite the superficial storytelling. Critic Randy Jones said the film would “make kids and fans happy”, referring again to Easter eggs, but ended with a cryptic comment that the film is being produced by Illumination (the studio that gave us despicable Me), perhaps hinting at a silly, over-the-top tone.

Not all critics were eager to call this film the superstar of the early summer movie season. Germain Lussier saying that he was “bored and annoyed rather than entertained” by the film’s story, music, and gags.
