Everyone prioritizes differently when it comes to expectations of what makes TV good. For some, it’s all about being as thematically rich as possible; others care most about plot integrity. For some, the characters are most important, and in the same vein, the relationships between said characters. In that spirit, today we’re talking about the best duos in a supernatural TV series. Characters caught in dangerous situations outside of the science of explanation often benefit from the combination, and when the chemistry is right, we as the audience benefit too. A good couple can raise love for the series as a whole, and the following duets do just that. WITH Ryan Coogler to restart Secret materials - a show that appears on this list and pretty much created the “ship” - it’s only right that we’re digging into the best pairings of the Supernatural TV show.
Korra and Asami in The Legend of Korra
Ironically, this endgame pair of The Legend of Korra disagreements began over the boy. Korra (Janet Varney) decided that she didn’t like Asami (Seychelles Gabriel), when the latter started dating Mako (David Faustino), but soon she could not help but like the girl when they spent some time together. Mako played a bit of ping pong between the two girls, but they surprisingly didn’t let him antagonize each other.
Once their relationship with Mako ended, Korra and Asami became very close, but there was clearly more than just friendship between them. Their alliances became more and more frequent, and when Korra leaves, Asami is the only one she stays in touch with. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to see them make it official on screen, but the series finale pretty much implies that they’re finally giving romance a shot.
Buffy and Spike in Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Buffy (Sarah Michelle Geller) and Spike (James Marsters) represent one of our favorite types of duets; namely, those who start out as enemies. They reluctantly reunited due to their shared interest in dividing the world, and Spike initially developed a one-sided crush as they continued to work together. Their bickering and sexual tension constantly made their interactions the most interesting to watch.
Buffy eventually succumbed to their chemistry and they had a very complicated and unstable relationship that ended badly, leading Spike to realize that he needed to make a change. He was tortured to get his soul back so he could finally be someone Buffy could have a healthy relationship with. The two became partners again and grew closer over the course of the final season. Buffy the Vampire Slayerto the point where Spike was often the only one in Buffy’s corner, and vice versa.
Mulder and Scully in The X-Files
Not only that, MulderDavid Duchovny) and Scully (Gillian Anderson) is one of the best duets on TV shows about the supernatural, but these two are considered one of the best duets of all time, period. These two super cute characters made the scenes they starred in together sing with their chemistry and charisma. It’s hard to define their relationship, but the bond the two shared was definitely not repeated anywhere else.
Much of the success Secret materials can be attributed to this pair. Mulder and Scully were professional partners, casual rivals, best friends, and eventually their relationship became romantic. The couple had such amazing chemistry that Secret materials The fandom created the term “shipping”.
Steve and Dustin in Stranger Things
Steve (Joe Keery) and Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo) barely interacted in the first season and proved to be an unlikely duo in the second season. While Steve’s girlfriend Nancy (Natalia Dyer) played detective with Jonathan (Charlie Heaton), Steve was trying to track her down to make amends over a fight they had. Meanwhile, Dustin had a demo dog in his arms that grew so fast that it went from a tadpole to a creature big enough to eat his cat in just a few days. He went looking for his friends, but MikeFinn Wolfhard) helped Will (Noah Schnapp) and Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin) was occupied by Max (Sadie Sink).
So, since the two were out of touch, they found each other. Dustin needed help fighting the monsters, and Steve just needed something to do. Not only did this duo prove to be hilarious when the two actors teamed up in a way that enhanced their already charming screen presence, but they also formed a true brotherly bond. Steve helped Dustin gain confidence in himself, and Dustin helped Steve get rid of the image of a high school athlete that prevented him from being the best in himself.
Sam and Dean in Supernatural
We couldn’t make a list of the best supernatural TV show duos without mentioning the brothers who serve as the protagonists of the show, which is literally called supernatural. Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (jensen) are brothers at the center of the show, followed by viewers for as many as 15 seasons of supernatural adventures.
Big brother Dean spends most of his life taking care of Sam, who is four years his junior. The two became much more reliant on each other after their mother’s death at the hands of a demon. Through the years of hunting monsters, the two shared an incredibly close bond that caught the attention of fans of the series, no matter how popular certain seasons’ storylines were. Although they found themselves at odds at different times, they always came out of any situation with a deeper connection.
Elena and Damon in The Vampire Diaries
Elena (Nina Dobrev) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder) don’t exactly start with the best footing. Damon shows up in Mystic Falls and actually wreaks havoc on the city Elena has called home all her life, and she does everything she can to get in his way. To complicate matters, Elena was in a deeply committed relationship with his younger brother Stefan (Paul Wesley). Even though they didn’t get along, Damon and Elena managed to strike a strange truce based on their genuine connection.
When Stefan and Elena broke up, she found herself in the middle of a good old love triangle. The truce between Damon and Elena had developed into a friendship by then, despite both parties knowing that he was in love with her. Everything changes when Elena becomes a vampire and realizes that Damon is the only one who accepts her unconditionally, at her best and worst.
Laszlo and Colin in What We Do in the Shadows
Lazlo (Matt Berry) and Colin (Mark Proksh) the most unlikely pair on What are we doing in the shadowsbut that’s what makes them so fun to work with. Lazlo lives with his vampire wife Nadia (Natasha Demetriou), longtime friend and fellow vampire Nandor (Kayvan Novak) and energy vampire Colin Robinson, with whom the cheerful Lazlo seems to have very little in common.
Everything changes in the third season, in which the actors explore their immortality in a new way. For Lazlo, this leads to a sort of depression, as he realizes that always sucking blood and “fucking forever” may not be as meaningful as he would like. Meanwhile, Colin wants to know more about the history of energy vampires: where did they come from and if they are immortal like normal vampires. These individual journeys bring Lazlo and Colin closer together in a strange yet sweet friendship that brings them closer than ever before.
Geralt and Dandelion in The Witcher
Geralt (Henry Cavill) and Buttercup (Joey Baty) perform the hackneyed but proven image of a duo consisting of one grumpy guy and one blockhead. Geralt the Grouch (aka Geralt of Rivia) leads a solitary life, rarely opening up to anyone or forming lasting emotional attachments. Dandelion enters, a bard hungry for companionship and adventure who doesn’t know how to take a hint.
The two quickly become a true duo, traveling together as Geralt slays monsters and Dandelion creates a soundtrack in hopes of rehabilitating his surly friend’s public image. The two had a falling out towards the end of the first season, and Geralt said a few harsh things that led to them completely going their separate ways. Fans have been looking forward to their reunion in Season 2 and it didn’t disappoint. They soon returned to their signature dynamic, a fan-favorite part of the show.
Hilda and Zelda Spellman in Chilling Adventures of Sabrina
Zelda Spellman (ur.Miranda Otto) and her sister Hilda Spellman (Lucy Davis) are perfect opposites. Zelda is a Scribe Witch, ready to take on the mantle of High Priestess of the Church of the Night from the moment we meet her. Though we’ll have to wait a bit for history to work its way through marriages, assassination attempts, and attacks from the Dark Lord (Luke Cook), Zelda relies on her sharp mind to get her there, and on her sister Hilda.
Hilda Spellman leads with love. Sabrina (Kiernan Shipka) of two aunts, Hilda is generally more inclined to empathize with Sabrina’s teenage struggles - as she struggles with getting caught between her witch and mortal life. Hilda is also adept at potions, often concocting cures that save the day. Sabrina is incredibly lucky to have two polar opposite aunts in her life who help her on her way to full transformation into a witch, the Queen of Hell and the like. Even when Zelda kills Hilda just to revive her in the family graveyard… it’s all out of love.
