Over the past few weeks, the future Saturday night life was in the air as the editors prepared to go on strike if they couldn’t get a deal with NBC. In the original exclusive news from DeadlineDiscussions began when the Film Editors Guild made proposals back in December 2022 stating that the editorial team was being “paid well below industry standards” and also noting that the show’s assistant editors were getting “only a fraction” of their allied counterparts.
The NBCU responded less than the guild and editors expected and began talking about a strike until NBC listened to them. The news now is that a tentative deal has been made and that they will not currently be on strike on April 1st as planned. Show to be held Quinta Brunson as host with musical guest Lil Yachtswould have been the first release after a two-week hiatus.
The new preliminary agreement will include a salary increase of more than 60% ahead of the three-year agreement. It also includes “validation bonuses, medical benefits, employer-sponsored meals, transportation and hotel accommodations for employees working long shifts with short breaks,” according to Deadline.
“We are very pleased to have reached this preliminary deal,” said Katy Repola, National Executive Director of the Film Editors Guild. “Thanks to the tremendous determination of the team, we have reached an agreement that represents real achievements in each of the areas that our members have identified as key, including a significant increase in wages. We will postpone a detailed public discussion of the terms until our negotiators have had a chance to meet with the entire team to review the deal and vote on its ratification.”
If the strike had taken place, it would have been the first in the series’ nearly 50-year run. Talk about a strike prepared during Pedro Pascal took over the episode and continued as Jenna Ortega with musical guest 1975. And so the looming threat of a strike was present in several episodes of the popular show with actors such as James Austin Johnson And Colin Yost wearing contract shirts for their editors while presenting the Pascal episode.
The thing is, the show needs its editors, and ignoring their requests seemed like a dumb idea given the fact that they work tirelessly to make sure the live show runs smoothly. Hopefully this deal is what the editors wanted and works well for them going forward. Saturday night life.
