For some viewers Decrease misrepresents psychology. But the Apple TV+ series doesn’t have to reflect what it’s like to go to therapy to make a difference. Jason Segel-LED series comes to us from the same people behind Ted Lasso — Bill Lawrence And Brett Goldstein creators and executive producers Decrease, so if the tempo seems familiar, here’s why. The 2023 release may not hit all the same notes as the favorite. Jason Sudeikis series, but Decrease imitates magicTed Lasso. It captures real life and all the filth that comes with it and presents it in a digestible format meant for enjoyment and contemplation rather than a case study of what it means to be a therapist or go to therapy.
Decrease follows Jimmy (Siegel), a therapist who believes a more hands-on approach to his practice will allow him to better help his patients. “I think I can help people if I get my hands a little dirty,” Jimmy says at the premiere. We know what they must do. Don’t you ever want to shake them?” Of course, this is a completely unheard of and unethical approach to therapy, but it is also fiction.
TV doesn’t always have to be 100% realistic
Imagine for a moment the process of going to therapy. You are probably imagining two people sitting across from each other, and one of them asks, “And how does that make you feel? This may be one approach to mental health, but there are so many methods and approaches to therapy today that the image is somewhat outdated, not to mention stereotypical. Jimmy’s unconventional approach to therapy is, of course, a fabrication, but that hasn’t stopped him from being criticized and controversial. Of course, this isn’t what you’d get if you walked into a licensed therapist’s office, but most people would benefit from honest advice like Jimmy’s.
Therapy and therapists are becoming more common in pop culture. Steve Carell played a therapist who was kidnapped and forced to work with a serial killer on Hulu. Patient, another show that takes a completely irrational approach to mental health. But how does Jimmy do it? Decrease, Dr. Strauss (Carell) takes an unconventional approach. Other contemporary non-traditional portrayals of therapy include Robin (Cobie Smulders) Therapist (Kal Penn) V How I Met your mother And Nicole KidmanCeleste at the appointment with her therapist (Roby Weigert) who tells her to leave her husband in Big little lies.
“Reduction” is not really related to therapy
First of all, Decrease was not created as a commentary on therapy or therapists. The show is about a man grieving the loss of his wife and other losses that come with it. From his relationship with his daughter Alice (Lukita Maxwell) to his previously close relationship with longtime best friend Brian (Michael Ury) and dedication to his job, Jimmy lost more than his wife when Tia (Lillian Bowden) died. Decrease does not focus on Jimmy’s career as a therapist. Instead, it’s about a man picking up the pieces after a tragedy and trying to find himself again.
Moreover, Decrease never claims to be a therapy show. He never promised to portray what it means to be a therapist or go to therapy. Instead, Jimmy’s career is the backdrop for a larger story. To demonstrate this, imagine that Jimmy invited his patient Sean (Luke Tenney) live with it. This notion is unheard of in reality because it is completely unethical. But it’s fiction, so Jimmy’s actions pass by.
Episode of this week Decrease, “Potato”—whose title, if it’s worth it, would be more accurate if called “Jimmy Who Eats Wrong Food”—further pushes this suspension of disbelief. When Jimmy walks home with one of his OCD patients, Wally (Kimberly Condict), she tries to kiss him. Granted, this probably happened in a therapy room or two, but the moment was meant to be comic relief, not therapy commentary.
Good and bad sides of everyday life
The Apple TV+ series aims to mimic life and all the good and bad that comes with it through a fictional but understandable lens. Did Jimmy find out that his daughter was sleeping with their son’s roommate? Connected. Alice relies on people like LizChrista Miller) and Pavel (Harrison Ford) when her father goes inside after Tia’s death? Sad, but for some reality. Decrease captures these big, complex things that happen to real people and combines them into a story eloquently condensed into a 30-minute running time.
Jimmy could have made any career under the sun and Decrease it will still be about a person grieving. Instead of focusing on making Jimmy’s career as a therapist really accurate, the character’s work becomes a storytelling tool that allows Decrease build on comedy and move the story forward in a meaningful way.
‘Shrink’ - and all TV shows really - are designed to escape
Perhaps most importantly, viewers should remember how Ted Lasso and various other works of fiction in pop culture, Decrease should be a cathartic escape for the viewer. In fact, finding a therapist to help you achieve your mental health goals is not as fast as it is between Sean and Jimmy in Decrease. But you have more time to build a relationship with a therapist than a 10-episode character on Apple TV+.
Call Decrease Dangerous is a deeply flawed interpretation of what the show was made for. Those who argue with Decreasethe portrayal of mental health might be more interested in a documentary about therapy, therapists and the like. Part of what makes Decrease therefore, it is worth looking at the mirror that it holds in front of the viewer. Perhaps instead of criticizing the show’s portrayal of therapy, what people dislike most about Decrease this is what it reflects about them.
Finally, for what it’s worth, if you’re referring to a show like Decrease for legal mental health advice, remember it is not based on ethics, standard mental health practices, or even standard doctor-patient boundaries. Generally speaking, never expect to walk into a therapist’s office and get the kind of help you’ve seen on TV. Instead, take Decrease for what it stands at first glance - a work of fiction designed to bring joy and escape from the world.
