While 2022 has been a stellar year for cinema, films like Top Shooter: Maverick and All Everywhere All At Once reminding viewers how special it can be to go to the cinema, this is not the case for every movie released this year.
Some of the films released this year have actually managed to get audiences talking for all the wrong reasons. Whether it was because one actor allegedly spat on his co-star, or because the movie was more famous for the memes it inspired than the movie itself, 2022 has also been a year filled with controversy.
‘Morbius’
The It’s Morbin Time phenomenon has ruled social media ever since. Morbius hit theaters in April. Even a movie star Jared Letotook part in the action by sharing on Twitter a video of him holding a supposed script for a sequel titled “Morbius 2: Time of Morbin”.
Unfortunately, the memes and labored, slightly desperate post-credits scenes are probably what the underwhelming superhero movie is best remembered for, given the terrible reviews it received and the fact it failed to ignite at the box office.
“Bubble”
Bubble should have been a resounding success considering it was one of the few major releases during the lockdown that was really about lockdown. And also for the simple reason that in those dark times, people needed to laugh more than ever, which makes the movie’s almost total lack of laugh-out-loud moments all the more disappointing.
Despite the fact that an all-star cast was assembled for the project, Bubble a rare misfire for a director Judd Apatow. Perhaps the subject matter was simply too raw for most viewers, or perhaps most just didn’t think the film was good enough to watch. But in any case, the film will be a huge disappointment for all involved.
“Fantastic Beasts: A Dumbledore Mystery”

Rowling writes every entry in the franchise, despite her constant transphobic ranting and issues surrounding franchise stars. “Halloween Ends”
Though Halloween is ending promised to end the decade-long feud between iconic last girl Laurie Strode and masked serial killer Michael Myers, the film actually spent more time introducing a new antagonist in uniform. Rohan Campbell Corey.
This decision angered fans, especially since the film went to such lengths to weaken Michael in every scene he shared with Corey before restoring his seemingly supernatural strength when he eventually confronted Laurie. While the film was by no means bad, it simply didn’t live up to the prior marketing campaign that upset and angered many fans.
“Jurassic World: Dominion”
Movie theaters are now dominated by sequels from yesteryear, and all types of franchises are reuniting iconic characters with new characters that can propel the franchise forward. While many traditional sequels are done right, creating an overall sense of nostalgia, Jurassic World: Dominion completely missed.
Although Ellie Sattler, Alan Grant, and Ian Malcolm returned for the film, they spent most of their screen time doing a seemingly random side quest, fighting huge insects rather than dinosaurs. Simply put, the old characters deserved much more than they got.
‘Landing on the Moon’
Roland Emmerich is a director whose name is almost exclusively associated with the disaster film, and throughout his career it has served him well. Films like Independence Day and Day after tomorrow grossed huge at the box office, but his latest film Moon landing could well mark the end of the disaster movie.
The film’s plot is typically hilarious and the staging is a bit rude, but what really sets it apart is Moon landing The difference between the disaster films of the past is that it did not leave a box office failure, hinting at the complete death of the genre.
“Black Adam”
Dwayne Johnson was full of exaggerations in preparation for release Black Adam, promising that the film will forever change the hierarchy of power in the DC Universe. And while Black Adam was certainly powerful, it seems that his lasting impact on the DC Universe will be anything but.
Things have changed steadily since James Gunn and Peter Safran were announced as the new heads of the DC Universe, with Henry Cavillwhich appeared in Black Adam post-credits scene, no longer returning as Superman and Black Adam 2 no longer progresses. The hierarchy of power in the DC Universe has certainly changed, but not in the way Johnson had hoped.
‘Pinocchio’
In 2022, two different Pinocchio films, although the difference in quality between them was huge. Bye Pinocchio Guillermo del Toro received rave reviews from viewers and critics, Robert Zemeckis’ take on the story rather upset audience.
Even though it boasts an excellent cast that includes such Tom Hanks, Joseph Gordon-Levittand Cynthia Erivo, the strange CGI and the appearance of the most titled puppet disturbed the audience to the point that the film became almost unwatchable. 2022 was not the best year for animation, and Pinocchio is one of the films to blame.
‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre’
There were an almost comical number of sequels. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and almost none of them are as good as the iconic original. The most recent attempt to cash in on the beloved original film’s appeal was sold to Netflix after a series of terrible test screenings.
It’s easy to see why test audiences disliked the film so much. Aside from the gore the franchise is known for, there’s nothing here to draw either fans of the original or newcomers. Unfortunately for everyone involved, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre might just be the worst horror movie of the year.
“Don’t Worry Darling”
In the run-up to the film’s release, it was safe to assume Don’t worry dear will be a hit. The talent put into the project both in front of the camera and behind it, combined with the original concept, thrilled the public. This continued until the drama surrounding the film took center stage, eventually proving to be more interesting than the film itself.
With Shia LaBeouf refuting director Olivia Wilde claim he was fired and filed divorce papers very publicly, the movie was already on rocky ground before rumors of Harry Styles spits on his partner Chris Pine launched at the Venice Film Festival. It’s sad that the original film boasts a typically exceptional performance from Florence Pugh turned into gossip, but again, the film’s premature ending and unsatisfactory twist did not draw positive reviews.
