The Portuguese government has launched a four-day working week pilot project. Minister of Labor, Solidarity and Social Security Ana Méndez Godinho announced that 46 companies, both public and private, have joined the programme.

Four day work week in Portugal

– Four of them are large companies employing more than 1,000 people – said the head of the Ministry of Labour, Solidarity and Social Protection.

In total, the pilot will cover about 20,000 people. employees.

The Ministry of Labour, Solidarity and Social Protection, together with entrepreneurs, is analyzing the conditions and expected consequences of introducing a four-day work week from March. Among other things, it was thought about how to improve the quality of employment of employees while increasing the productivity and competitiveness of companies intending to introduce a shorter work week.

Mendez Godinho does not rule out that the four-day workweek pilot project could be enriched in the future by decisions taken by other European countries that have introduced rules allowing people to work in the four-day workweek system, such as Great Britain or Iceland.

Poles plan to introduce a four-day work week

The issue of a four-day working week is also being discussed in Poland. The pilot of this decision - in case of victory in the parliamentary elections - was announced almost a year ago by the leader of the Civic Platform, Donald Tusk. This idea, as polls show, was received positively by the Poles.

In a recent study by Human Resources for the Polish Labor Market Barometer, a four-day work week was named one of the top benefits, after pay raises and bonuses, that Polish workers most look forward to.

“Shortening the workweek and looking forward to extra days off is a trend that has gained momentum in the wake of the pandemic, and employers should consider this in their HR strategies. Workers, especially Generation Z, expect work-life balance, and for many of them, leisure and leisure time are as important as remuneration. commented Krzysztof Inglot from Human Resources.
