Villas, yachts, planes, works of art - this is one of the few possessions of Russian oligarchs frozen by Italy. The country is one of the EU leaders in this respect.
Giuseppe Zafarana, commander-in-chief of the Italian Financial Guard, said today that the value of the assets of Russian oligarchs frozen in Italy over the past year is about 2 billion euros. The assets are owned by 23 people and three companies.

On Tuesday, Zafarana presented a report to the Defense Committee of the Chamber of Deputies, stressing that 1,600 people and organizations have been checked over the course of more than a year.
The list of frozen assets includes: historic villas, estates in Tuscany and on the Emerald Coast of Sardinia, as well as two luxury yachts: Andrey Melnichenko’s “A” worth 530 million euros, moored in the port of Trieste, and the six-deck Scheherazade, moored in the port of Carrara in Tuscany attributed to Vladimir Putin. Its cost is 650 million euros.
Last year, the Italian government allocated 10.7 million euros for the maintenance of frozen assets - primarily the residences and yachts of Russian oligarchs.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni reaffirmed her support for Ukraine on Tuesday. In a speech in the Senate on the eve of the European Union summit, which begins on Thursday, the head of the Italian government said: “EU unity is necessary in the face of Russian aggression against Ukraine.” – In the geopolitical and diplomatic dimension, it is crucial to put pressure on Moscow to ensure compliance with international law and, moreover, to create conditions for a path of negotiations in order to achieve a just peace – Meloni said.

The Prime Minister of Italy stressed that while these conditions are “not ripe”, but “every day we stubbornly strive for them.”
According to the data of the European Commission, presented at the end of 2022, Italy is in third place in terms of the number of assets of Russian oligarchs and structures on the sanctions list frozen by the EU countries. The figures given at the time show that Italy has frozen 2.3 billion euros. The leader of the ranking, that is, Belgium, froze 3.5 billion euros, while Luxembourg took second place, 2.5 billion euros. Just behind the podium was Germany (€2.2bn), followed by Ireland (€1.8bn), Austria (€1.8bn), France (€1.3bn) and Spain (€1bn).
