The General Directorate of National Roads and Highways is working to improve safety. One idea currently under consideration is to reduce the number of signs and speed limits.
Are there too many road signs on Polish roads? Such voices are not uncommon. Those who think so note that the excess of signs leads to the fact that drivers simply stop noticing them. As soon as a warning or restriction passes by, you stop paying attention to it. In addition, overly strict speed limits cause drivers to distrust them. Since there is a 40 km/h limit before the turn, and you can drive it twice as fast, then you can assume that the limits do not make sense … and when the sign is actually set in accordance with reality from time to time, there will be a problem and it will become dangerous.
Security Forum by GDDKiA
In October 2021, the General Directorate of National Roads and Highways established a traffic management and road safety forum.
The purpose of the forum was to identify and develop solutions that can improve road safety. Now the experts from the group presented their ideas and conclusions to GDDKiA. Moto.pl writes about it.
“The purpose of these measures is, among other things, to reduce the number of road signs while maintaining or even improving road safety. This is the first step towards changing the Red Book,” the Main Directorate explains. The Red Book contains labeling rules.
There will be fewer characters
As indicated in the GDDKiA, first of all, it is planned to reduce the number of signs B-33, that is, indicating the speed limit. “Signs will only be used where drivers might be surprised by a speed limit change. Each such sign will be preceded by information indicating the reason for setting the speed limit at that location. The driver will know why you really need to go slower in a certain place.
In addition, there may be - following the example of Germany - separate speed limits applicable only during rain or generally bad weather conditions. Another change could be an increase in the duration of the yellow traffic light. This change must occur on roads where the speed limit exceeds 50 km/h. Fortunately, GDDKiA does not believe that the only way to increase security is to reduce speed limits…
