The more you can do, the greater your chances of staying alive: what are the requirements for drivers and mechanics at the front?

In Ukraine, where martial law and general mobilization have been extended until November 15, the Armed Forces of Ukraine need not only those who will hold weapons in their hands, but also specialists, in particular drivers, who can cope with difficult situations, repair equipment - weld something , rivet or seal somewhere, replace filters or rebuild the motor. Without such people there is nothing to think about the mobility of military units.

The Telegraph publication spoke with military drivers, who talked about the details of the work and the necessary skills. It turned out that in all units there are two key categories of drivers: ordinary drivers and mechanic-drivers of infantry fighting vehicles and tanks.

The requirements for a vehicle driver are quite simple - a driver’s license to drive a category B/C car and a minimum driving experience is enough. And specific training can be acquired upon conditional approval and when driving in extreme conditions. At the same time, driving quickly and maneuverably is considered a golden skill.

And in order to become a mechanical driver, it is advisable not only to have a driver’s category of C and above, but also knowledge of how to operate special equipment.

“Let’s take the conditional Max-Pro and BTR-4. On the Maxpro (MRAP), the controls are approximately the same as on a heavy minivan, and you just need to get used to the dimensions and master some of the operating instruments, – a volunteer fighter told reporters. - And both the bus driver and the guy who played Mortal Kombat yesterday can learn how to use the BTR-4 from scratch at the same time. Provided that both of them had not ridden it before. Everything else is there, from the control system to the inability to smoke out the window. “In the end, there is a lot of military equipment, and before you get into a combat vehicle, you need to undergo specialized specialized training.”

Another interlocutor noted that all military personnel have personal weapons, but not everyone and not everyone uses them - there are many tasks in communication, logistics, repair of military equipment…

“An important skill for a driver is the ability to get out of difficult situations, disguise himself and make basic repairs to his car. The more you can do, the greater your chances of staying alive. You may just be able to carry troops. But he must be ready to be a driver for evacuation or a truck for delivering provisions. The profession of a driver in the Armed Forces of Ukraine still remains risky, because in this situation you are the captain of the ship,” - says the military man.
