US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said that the decision of countries to provide Ukraine with military assistance is a “sovereign decision”, according to CNN. His comments came after Poland announced on March 16 that it would send four MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine in the coming days.
“As for Poland’s decision to provide fighter jets to Ukraine, these are sovereign decisions by countries that decide for themselves what they will provide to Ukraine to help it defend itself against Russian aggression.Blinken said. - We are of course working closely with dozens of countries on these issues, but different countries do different things based on what they have and what needs they have.“.
Blinken signaled that Poland’s decision would not change the Biden administration’s stance against sending fighter jets to Ukraine right now.
“We have focused on doing our best to make sure that Ukraine has what it needs, what it can use, and what it especially needs at this moment, while dealing with both the offensive that we are seeing from Russia on the entire eastern front, as well as preparations for her own actions in the coming weeks and months, when she will try to return most of the territory that Russia has seized from her.Ethoni Blinken said.
He added that it would be a mistake to focus on any one weapon system. He drew attention to the wide range of military resources needed by Ukraine, including air defense, artillery, ammunition and armored vehicles.
“Secretary of Defense Austin, as you know, has spearheaded a very, very successful process of bringing together dozens of countries to help find and coordinate this assistance.”he noted.
Recall that the US is testing the skills of Ukrainian pilots on the F-16.
