Despite European sanctions against the Kremlin since the start of the war in Ukraine, Greece remains one of the main carriers of Russian oil. This is stated in a recent publication of the French authoritative publication francetvinfo.fr.
“Despite the sanctions, Russian oil continues to flow to Europe. It is transported by a European country - Greece. Its ships are responsible for the discreet transportation of Russian oil to the rest of the world. With an embargo on Russian oil set to take effect at the end of the year, Greek shipowners are moving forward in disguise. How do they do it? A Maltese-flagged ship, actually a Greek one, is loading oil from another Russian-flagged ship. They then export oil to major European and world ports.”
Indeed, the publication concludes, the role of Greek carriers is far from insignificant: since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, 23.8 million barrels of Russian oil have been transported by Greek ships. Thus, Greece is one of the main carriers of Russian oil, contrary to the principle of European sanctions, said Maria-Evgenia Sanin, a lecturer at the University of Paris-Saclay and an expert in geopolitics.
Meanwhile, the EU is allocating hundreds of billions of euros to protect its citizens from Russia’s gas blackmail.
