In Ukraine, where electricity has been cut off due to shelling lately, Internet and mobile communications disappear after a power outage. This happens for several reasons. Told about it Yury Matsyk, Director of the Fixed Internet Development Department of the Ministry of Digital Developmentwrites Economic Truth.

“There are two reasons. The first is that when the light turns off, the power to the tower is also not supplied and the battery works. The battery life is roughly four hours. Depending on the type, the battery can take up to 24 hours to fully charge. If there are four-by-four shutdowns, then in the next cycle the battery is charged by a maximum of 50%, then by 30%. A day later, it is only 10% charged. When the light is turned off again, it will still work for these 10% and “die”. The second reason is accessibility. Networks are built based on how many users will be in a particular area at the same time and how much content they will consume. At the same time, the calculations take into account the fact that some people will use the Internet via wi-fi. When they suddenly lose access to wi-fi due to a power outage, everyone tries to access the mobile network, which has limited bandwidth. This is a frequency range that allows you to skip a certain amount of information. It won’t fit in there anymore.”he explains.

According to Macik, sometimes it can be that there is a connection, but the Internet is not.

“There are usually three different technologies installed in a base station. The first one that we found with you is edge or 2G. It is able to skip only short text messages, but allows you to make voice calls. Next is 3G technology. It allows you to transfer a small amount of information, such as pictures and low quality videos. Since 2020, 4G technology has been launched throughout Ukraine, and in large cities since 2018. A single battery base station powers multiple antennas providing different services. Antennas from 4G are the first to die, because they are the most energy dependent, and with 2G they are the last. Therefore, it may be that there is a connection, but there is no Internet.he says.

The official added that now the connection in the villages is better than in big cities due to the number of subscribers.

As wrote, earlier Ukrainians were told how to stay connected to the Internet, even if the coverage of the “native” operator disappeared, as well as how to restore the connection on their own if the smartphone does not catch the network well.
