Riots erupted at the world’s largest iPhone assembly plant, Foxconn’s factory in Zhengzhou, China, on Nov. Troops dressed in chemical uniforms were sent against protesting workers, using clubs and kicking factory workers.
China’s “zero covid” policy and lack of money
Difficulties are related to China’s “zero covid” policy. Due to the strict rules in place in the Middle Kingdom, isolated cases of coronavirus infection have led to the fact that the Foxconn factory began to work in an enhanced sanitary regime, which turned out to be very burdensome for employees.
The company decided to send some of them home and hire new employees to replace them. Newly hired people were settled in rooms where a moment earlier they lived infected with the coronavirus. Foxconn reports that the premises have been disinfected.
Adding fuel to the fire was the fact that new employees were promised special cash bonuses for agreeing to work in an enhanced sanitary regime. However, it soon became clear that the money did not reach their accounts. This increased anger and prompted the workers to go on strike.
Foxconn says it’s a technical error
On November 24, the company released a statement explaining that the lack of transfers was due to a “technical issue” encountered during the hiring process. However, she assured that the funds would be paid in the amount promised on flyers and posters calling to join Foxconn. One employee told the BBC that he had already received 8,000 yuan, but we were promised another 2,000 yuan.
