Day after day, Hubert Gurkacz played his matches at the Grand Slam in London. Wroclawets on Friday dealt with Lorenzo Musetti in three sets. Thanks to this victory, the Pole reached the fourth round of Wimbledon.
In the ranking of tennis players, Lorenzo Musetti was higher than Hubert Gurkacz. The Italian is currently ranked 16th in the world, and the Pole is 18th, which was also seen in the standings. Musetti was number fourteen and Gurkacz was number seventeen.
Equal set in Hubert Gurkacz’s match
As confirmation, the fans could follow a very even start. Museti, now Italy’s No. 2 behind Yannick Sinner, reached that spot for the first time at a tournament in London. Therefore, the experience was on the side of Wroclaw. Both gentlemen, however, spared their serves, which led to a tie-break in the first set. Gurkach showed himself much better in it. “Hubi” even led 6:1, but in the end the Italian managed to win back some of the losses, reducing the defeat to 4:7.
It was much calmer for the Pole in the second set. It all started with a break in the third installment (3:1), which was decisive for adding a second brick to the construction of victory. Gurkach impressed both in service and in a longer exchange. It can be seen that the Pole feels very good when playing on grass.
Anniversary victory and match with Novak Djokovic
After winning 6:4 in the second set, it was clear that Musetti felt the advantage of the opponent. The Italian lost confidence in his serve plays, often defending against the Wrocław’s ever-increasing offensive. Gurkach started the third set very well, adding another break in the first set.
This situation forced Musetti to rise above the abyss. The Italian did not manage to get out of trouble, eventually losing to the Pole “to zero” in sets. In the latter, the Pole won 6:4. In fairness, in the last game of the match, the Pole pretty much got out, having 15:40 on his serve. But he managed to defend himself with a great serve.
Gurkach, having won against the Italian, recorded his 150th victory in his professional career. Moreover, there is a high probability that Huby will face Novak Djokovic in the fourth round. The Serb is on the same side of the stairs as the Pole. However, whether Djoko will become Gurkach’s rival, we will find out on Friday evening … or on Saturday. The bout between the reigning Wimbledon champion since 2022 and experienced Stan Wawrinka is scheduled for Friday’s final bout. Therefore, it may turn out that the gentlemen will not be able to finish the fight before the tournament curfew, which occurs at 23:00 local time (midnight in Poland).
We also note that the entry into the fourth round of the Pole is the fourth such case in the Grand Slam tournaments in the edition of Gurkach.
