Iga Sviontek accelerates on the courts of Roland Garros. Poland did it again

Must read

Iga Sviontek advanced to the third round of the Roland Garros tournament. The WTA ranking leader defeated Claire Liu in straight sets, taking another step towards defending the title she won last year. In the next round, Rashinyanka will play Xinya Wang from China.

Iga Sviontek entered the second round match on the courts of Roland Garros as a favorite, and this is not surprising, because the polka is the leader of the WTA rating, additionally defending the title won in Paris a year ago. Rashinyanka met with an American tennis player of Chinese origin Claire Liu, who currently occupies 102nd place in the world hierarchy.

Iga Swiatek has problems in the first set in Paris

Yesterday’s birthday girl (Sviontek turned 22 on Wednesday, May 31) started Thursday’s match with a strong blow. Here’s how you can spot a 3-0 lead with two breaks from Liu. The American couldn’t find a recipe for a well-played polka. It was evident that she was clearly nervous because of the game with the leader of the world lists.

However, when Liu pulled herself together, she began to speak louder and louder. Effect? The gap from 3:0 turned into 3:3, and the rival Swiatek, who did not get into the first hundred of the WTA list, showed every, even the slightest mistake of the polka. The scenario of the first set was deceptively similar to what the Polish tennis player showed in the premiere game of the previous round of Roland Garros.

Polka, first of all, allowed her opponent to speak. And this, in the case of matches involving Swiatek, was not so obvious in the recent past. Liu followed her plan, playing mostly from the end of the court. The Polka wanted to speed up, but such an attacking game multiplied Rashinyanka’s mistakes. In the end, everything ended well, because Swiatek won 6:4. Just like the first set of the first round of RG 2023.

We add that the starting game lasted 51 minutes.

Replay of the scenario on the courts of Roland Garros

Polka regained control of the match in the second set of the competition with Liu. Several excellent draws effectively discouraged the American from moving on to the next round. This time, having moved 3:0 (two breaks again), the polka did not turn a blind eye, closing a confident victory in the set and the match. It is worth noting that in the fourth game, where Sviontek had to defend break points, there were a lot of emotions. Eventually, however, after a few minutes, she came out unscathed. Moreover, the Pole added another “donut”, beating Liu to zero (6:0).

The next opponent of the Pole will be Xinyu Wang. A Chinese girl is equal to Sviontek. On the courts in Paris, she has already achieved success in life, because she never managed to go beyond the first round. Ze Swiatek will compete for a place in the fourth round of the Grand Slam tournament. At the moment, the Chinese woman is ranked 80th in the world in tennis. In her match on Thursday, Wang defeated Rebecca Peterson of Sweden in straight sets (7-6, 6-2).
