The winner of the duel between Betis and Barcelona was waiting for Real Madrid, who beat Valencia on penalties in the first semi-final of the Spanish Super Cup. Robert Lewandowski returned to the field and immediately got on the list of snipers.
Real Betis - Barcelona. Lewandowski is back on set
The beginning of the match clearly belonged to Xavi’s players. Barcelona had much better possession of the ball and played it near the Verdiblancos penalty area. In the 10th minute, a dangerous situation arose with Betis goalkeeper Claudio Bravo, who was injured during a collision with one of the attackers.
Ten minutes later, a strange thing happened. Ter Stegen made a strong pass into the goal and hesitantly cleared the ball, which was close to an own goal by Sergi Roberto. A minute later, Jules Kunde made a fatal mistake when Nabil Fekir picked up the ball at the edge of the 16m and passed Ter Stegen, but missed because Ronald Araujo intervened brilliantly.
After this situation, Barcelona launched a counterattack. Rafinha received the ball from the right and gave a cross to Pedri, who beat Claudio Bravo. After some time, VAR delayed the goal because the Brazilian was in a minimal offside position. The next few minutes belonged to Betis. Wards Manuel Pellegrini several times got into dangerous situations. In the 32nd minute, Nabil Fekir made an excellent cross to Pezzelle’s head, but thanks to the intervention of the goalkeeper, there was no goal.
A moment later, Luis Enrique gave a five-meter pass, Rodri was close to close the account with a shot, but Jordi Alba managed to clear the ball at the last moment. However, the Catalan Duma struck first. In the 40th minute, Dembele fired a cross at Lewandowski, who was initially blocked by the goalkeeper, then finished off the ball and stumbled into the net, opening the scoring. The Verdiblancos were still looking for their chances but went into the locker room losing.
Betis did not lay down their arms
In the second half, Barcelona had more possession of the ball. We saw a slightly more boring 45 minutes, but there were also interesting situations. From the 50th minute until the next 10th, Real Betis led the game and threatened Ter Stegen’s goal. A very active player was Luis Enrique, who shot several times on goal.
In the 58th minute, Manuel Pellegrini’s men had a chance to score from a corner, but the Barcelona defenders successfully averted the danger. Five minutes later, Xavi made the first substitutions. Ousmane Dembele and Frenkie De Jong were replaced by Ferran Torres and Sergio Busquets.
The next few minutes were a classic exchange of blows. The ball circled from goal to goal and we had to wait until the 77th minute for the game to return to high speed. Luis Enrique received the ball in front of Barcelona’s penalty area before passing to Nablia Fekir, who fired a powerful shot wide of Ter-Stegen to equalize. Blaugrana did not lay down their arms and after 4 minutes Lewandowski hit the goal, but VAR won back the goal, as Ferran Torres was offside.
Both teams continued their attacks, but even six added minutes to the main time was not enough to tip the scales in favor of one of the teams. Ansu Fati was the closest to a goal in the 92nd minute, but could not beat Claudio Bravo. The players had to play in overtime.
Beautiful goals in extra time and penalties
Already in the third minute of extra time, Barcelona took a free kick from the right side of the field, after which the ball was knocked out. Ansu Fati caught up with her and defeated Claudio Bravo with a powerful air strike, putting Blaugrana ahead.
Betis was not going to give up. Seven minutes after the goal of the Barcelona winger, the Verdiblancos went on the attack. Luis Enrique received the ball from the right and successfully recovered Lauren Moron, who with a smart shot cleared past Marc Andre Ter-Stegen and equalized.
At the 118th minute of the match, Anders Guardado received a second yellow card, and, consequently, a red one. Despite further attacks, neither team scored the decisive goal and we had penalties which Barcelona won 4-2.
