This year’s PlusLiga season is historic with 16 teams, two more than before. The decision to expand the volleyball elite in Poland was commented by the President of the Polish Volleyball League Artur Popko, who unexpectedly justified this step.
President of the Polish Volleyball League Artur Popko took part in the program at Polsat Sport. It addresses the issue of expanding the PlusLiga to sixteen teams. Recall that two more teams have been added to the elite since the current season - Barkom-Każany Lwów and BBTS Bielsko-Biała.
President of the Polish Volleyball League: The increase in the number of teams provides opportunities for young people
According to the head of Polish volleyball, the increase in the number of teams in PlusLiga gives young players a chance to break through and get into the best teams.
- The age of volleyball players has increased compared to ten years ago. We used to say that only two teams used to compete, but today we are a more even league compared to the Italian league, Artur Popko emphasized.
Artur Popko: The system that exists today works
According to the president of the Polish Volleyball League, the current system works because, in cooperation with the national team, it has a medal at every event. - Emotions are running high, the audience is record-breaking, we have reached the point that Poland is the first in the world rankings, and the Polish team is the best in Europe. We have the highest number of viewers in the history of our league, and these elements work,” he continued.
According to Artur Popko, Poland should develop its own solutions in the field of league games. “We cannot look at others, we can only look at ourselves. We are the leading volleyball country, - he stressed.
The Polsat Sport commentator did not agree with the thesis of the President of the Polish Volleyball League, who said that PlusLiga should be similar to the NBA, where only virtuosos and the best play, and young guys only dream of playing there. “I don’t want to be strict, but now offers are being made to players who would not have found a place in the Plus League five years ago,” he said.
